Firefox 1.5 to be released today

I'm running the last RC and it seems real stable. KDE 3.5 is also coming out any day now.

So is it "Teh Win" or is it still firefox more or less? I love firefox on my windows box at work, but tend to use Konqueror unless I need to see a javascript page or something on my linux box. I don't use plugins though, so firefox just hasn't been that attractive to me since it seems to load pages at about 2/3s the speed Konq does. I do have to admit that I'm not particularly into the file browser + web browser milieu though.

Finally MSN webcam support is available on Linux, I hope SUSE will have packages for this soon!

Anyway, this is exactly what Steven was talking about on episode 110, that we as Linux users get excited about the latest twist in KDE

KDE is great. Not to knock the efforts of Gnome but KDE is a much more mature desktop. There's definitely room for both. I like a lot of the gtk baseed apps but fore me KDE is a better deskotop. I like Kanotix and recommend it to others. I'm not afraid to try out new distros. I'll be talking about Arch Linux for a bit on Wednesday's show. We have to try out new things and learn from them. Always keep an open mind!

Look at my latest icon. How do you know you love Smith & Wesson if you don't try out Ruger, HTK and Glock?!

Agreed. Nothing wrong to sticking with something you know that works for you.... yet keeping an open mind to new possibilities.

What I always do is install almost all of GNOME except it's window manager and login manager and a few other things, the I see this is that I'm kind of slaving GNOME to KDE, and apply a few GTK themes to make the GTK apps look like Qt apps.

Whenever I try GNOME I just see it as clunky and not very well intergrated, it's definiteley better than Windows's explorer desktop, but KDE is just a million times better for me, and gets me in a better mood because of the very light colors it has out of the box, and even better with SUSE's theme. I'm not a programmer so I can't tell if Qt ig better than GTK, but from what I've heard, it definiteley seems so, but I can't say anything about that.

What I find odd is that no other distro is using SUSE's YaST, it's been GPLed for a while and is a VERY mature configuration system, and looks awesome, and in general does a lot of neat stuff.

The thing that makes me love SUSE so much is the awesome theming that comes out of the box, the only things I tweak is stuff like file associations and multimedia support, polish and look and feel is just in there (Get "in there"... oh what am I saying

Just kidding

)

You should see my collection of distros I've been trying out A LOT of them over the 1½ year I've digging Linux.

There is no Fedora package for Firefox 1.5, and therefore it does not exist. You are mistaken.

Seriously, though I installed the first test release of FC5 which uses a Deer Park release candidate, and found it to be stable. In fact I really couldn't tell any difference until I looked at the version number.

It did seem a bit slow at times, but I attribute that mostly to the drastic changes that have been made to Xorg.

What sort of changes has been made to it? Has the new OpenGL acceleration, Xgl-like stuff, been implemented?

They're already packages for:

Arch Linux
Slackware: 10.2
Kubuntu: 5.10 (Breezy)
SUSE: 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and 10.0

Xorg has been broken up into about a hundred packages, rather than one big tarball. In theory you should see no changes, but it hasn't quite worked out that way.

This should make it much easier to maintain X as modules rather than one big unit. A change in one piece doesn't mean you have to download the entire package.

A side effect is it'll be easier to integrate stuff like Xgl by pulling a module and inserting a custom version.

FC5 test 1 is EXTREMELY rough, so hopefully when the changes get to normal people you won't even notice a difference.
