I owe Kubuntu an apology. Sort of.

Okay, today I started hacking around on my box a little more, and did another upgrade and dist-upgrade — there were another 81 MB of downloads waiting. I installed these, but apt-get kept crashing on libfame and gstreamer0.8-fame plugin. I removed these, and “gstreamer-plugins” rebooted, and did the dist-upgrade again — I now have a system with a true KDE 3.5 desktop (and yes, Konq now passes the acid2 test). I’m not sure what happened the first time ’round, but I absolutely did both an upgrade and a dist upgrade. FWIW, Plastik looks really bad with the new border in KDE 3.5 IMO - I really hope they rethink that look. So… Even though it was a hassle to to the upgrade, it’s now done, and looks very nice. Kudos to the Kubuntu team for their efforts.

However, I stand by many of the things I said earlier, especially how Kubuntu deals with newly inserted media -- it's insane now. You get two dialog boxes, one of which makes no sense, at least one konqueror window, and whatever default program runs whatever you've inserted. It's a damn mess. There are also other bugs in (k)ubuntu I do not encounter on other linux flavors that really bother me. There’s also the issue with the package names — ubuntu* really seems to confuse a lot of debs/repos as to what version of software is really running on the box. I recognize that this may be an issue with the packages, and not with (k)ubuntu, but still…

So, I’m still planning to replace Kubuntu, at least on my main workstation, at least until Dapper comes out — I may come crawling back at that point — I really don’t know. I’m still trying to figure out which direction I should go distro-wise though. Back to that eternal struggle…

upgrade to 3.5

I just upgraded my ubuntu to kde 3.5 and it looks like a lot of the problems that you were having went away because I was having some of those also.

above is the link to upgrade

hope you give it a try - 3.5 seem really cool and looks like the mac folks gave back some of their work to make konquorer only the second browser to pass the acid test.

have fun!!

Smack the SUSE theming and window decorations on it, I tell it looks damn sexy! 8)

I don't realy like the SuSE default window decoration. Personally I use a slightly modified blue sky theme with deKorator. But KDE3.5 does look somewhat better then 3.4 although not by a whole lot

Yeah, that's the repo I used -- I've been running 3.4.3 up until recently, and even gave 3.5 a few days to see if there were any show-stopper bugs. I have no idea why my initial install failed to do it's thing correctly, but after the second dist-upgrade everything is good again (though inserting media still gives me the red-ass).

AAAAAAAAAAARRRGH! There just doesn't seem to be a solution at this point. Sid is churning like Dann's stomach after a hard night of drinking pepper-beer, bailey's shots, and cocktail wieners in bbq sauce. Arch is great, but I'm frankly worried about breakage, and there seem to be some major issues with browser-based multimedia in it (both konq and firefox barf on more or less any stream I throw at them). This is pretty much a show stopper for me since I like to use my desktop as, well, a desktop. I don't care if the stuff opens in a new window instead of in-line, but hard-locking the browser and sometimes the OS is a no-no in my book.

Why cant at least the major distros get together and fix the shit that's broken in each other's distros? It's a little ridiculous.

I really don't like those wide blue window borders that KDE seems to be moving to. Suse-windeco has them, now plastik has them, pretty soon even Glow will have them at this rate (actually I really like the new Glow :))

Oh I hadn't even noticed Glow changed till now. Its a little better but I like blue sky better still. As far as package breakage is concerned the only good way to avoid it in my oppinion is by providing a static binary like PC-BSD is doing or compile from source like Gentoo. I have for the first time in a long long while had a completely uptodate distro. There are no packages that cannot be upgraded in portage which is more than I can say for any debian distro Ive tried (although I havn't tried any 'stable' version of it but I can't stand to be using old software).

I'm more worried about breakage with my Debian SID box than with Arch. It's been a few weeks now, with about a dozen Pacman updates with no issues what so ever.

As for my Kanotix box, which will soon be replaced with Arch, I've been scared of any sort of updates for the past few months.

Are you sure you got your codecs installed, Snarkout? I've been streaming video from video.google.com just fine on my Arch (well, Underground Desktop) box just fine... using Konqueror, no less.

In fact, I could never get the Quicktime videos on StarWars.com to play on my Kanotix box WITH sound, only without. However, on my Arch box, they play just fine... sound and everything.

Yeah, I have the codecs installed.

I had to move a file to filename.old to install kmplayer, so it's entirely possible that doing so broke something I suppose (which brings up a point that pacman, though it deals with deps, doesn't do so with much finesse). However, the kaffeine plugin crashes firefox altogether, and the mozilla mplayer plugin loads, but smashes all the buttons into whatever is loading, and eventually freezes before anything is actually played. I'd concede that this may be my issue, but at least two other people are having similar problems on the forums. I have seen people suggest gxine as an alternative, and I guess I'll give that a try next. My concern is that problems like these are exactly why I'm a bit fed up with kubuntu, and I don't want to be trading a demon for a devil, so to speak.

What do you have installed that you are streaming with?

I believe it is Kplayer / Mplayer.

problem with usb drive and ubuntu

Post by jsusanka » Mon Dec 05, 2005 3:49 pm

okay the problem came back when I would put in my usb drive and konqueror would open along with nautilus

this link fixes it - apparently ubuntu has something called ivman that handles this automount function.

it has always worked great except for this - looks like it is solved though

Thanks. I actually did something similar on my own (with knowledge I gleaned from setting automounting up in Arch). The point wasn't how to fix it (though I really do appreaciate the pointer), but that it's still flippin' broken. Sort of like their idiotic handling of every single damned optical drive I've ever used with (k)ubuntu, which is 7 completely different brands/makes at this point. I can GFI the fix, but stuff this simple to fix *shouldn't* be broken on "Linux For Humans." It just shouldn't.
