According to Heise Online, a german website, Berlin will be migrating to Linux, and when done, which probably take a few years, have migrated over 40.000 desktops to an open soure solution, Linux most likely.

The Barum commune has asked the Norwegian government for 1.15 million Norwegian kroners [US$173,435/€144,500] to implement a Linux solution for 15,000 students, 40 schools, and 1,200 teachers.
According to an article at digi.no, project manager Hilde Flugon indicated that the commune does not want to be stuck in a Windows world. They have chosen to use SUSE Linux and are currently looking for a supplier and contractor to handle installation and maintenance for the project.
The plan is to have all systems up and running within 12 months.
Schools in Tanum and Emma-Hjort have already begun using such a Linux solution, which has made IT maintenance easier and more affordable.

Honestly I think the only thing that will force vendors to open their API's and provide expanded hardware support will be big business. They really don't care about the little guy. They jump when big business shows up with a wad of cash.

Today I went and purchased
this 4.0 GB USB mini disk. The thing that I way very happy to see was Linux being listed in the manual as one of the OS the device supported.
I'm sure that a year ago, you probably wouldn't have seen Linux being mentioned like this.
It proves to me that Linux is starting to make in-roads in the minds of today's hardware developers.
Also, I'm glad I went today. It was the last one on the shelf, and at this price I can understand why.
