Since Qt is released under the GPL it's not possible to write proprietary software without violating Trolltech's license. Does anyone know how much they would charge Adobe for a license, to write say a program like Photoshop?
The GTK libaries are released under the LGPL which allows it to be used for proprietary software, I also noted that all the commercial proprietary software I've used on Linux has been GTK based, for example IglooFTP-PRO.
It's funny, people who writes proprietary software will happily pay for Microsoft's crab Visual Studio 2003, but they don't have the balls to pay for Qt, a very robust toolkit that's cross platform to not only Windows, Linux and Mac but also all the BSDs, Solaris and probably many more.
I guess people still view open source as a part of the world where the price of everything stands at zero.
I'm there are lots of people using Qt, but I do fear that people may be focusing more on GNOME for the small amount commercial proprietary software (I don't say "commercial software" because free software can absolutely be commercial, look at SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, or Novell Linux Desktop) that we need to be able to convince people to use Linux or other free and open source software.
At least Qt will be released under a BSD-style license of Trolltech ever goes out of business, so we could just hope that they go out of business
