How do I burn a VCD/DVD?

How do I burn a VCD and DVD? I want to try burning a VCD because I don't want to waste a DVD-R if I don't have to but Im not sure if my DVD player supports VCD's (well its not mine its my parents). So anyways I have a .avi movie of transporter 2 my dad wants to watch on the TV so what program(s) do I use to encode and burn it? I have tried Avidemux to encode it then k3b to burn it but it says it will only burn Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 to a VCD. Im trying to avoid commandline since I don't want to misstype something and get another cd coaster

Tovid is great at re-encoding to and from different formats. It's command line by default but there is a gui written in python for it.

I've been trying to get it to work for almost 2 days and still no luck. It doesn't seem to like that it will use 2 CDs. I've tried editing the xml file but I can't seem to burn the first cd however the second one will burn fine. The GUI seems to have a bug where it crashed after encoding the video files. Is there any other program that is perhaps farther into development? Thanks anyways Ill try playing around with it some more.
EDIT: Ok I was able to take the encoded videos and drop them in k3b and burn as a vcd but that is quiet annoying and it would be nice if I didn't have to use both programs. Plus Tovid is very slow to encode since it saves all the audio as wav to my harddrive then encodes it (it would be better if it just saved the encoding to my harddrive)
