Howdy all,

I'm looking to purchase a new domain name and I'm wondering which company folks here might recommend. In the past I used ghandi.net however their service seems pricey by recent day comparison so I'm looking to try something new. I would prefer a service that offers “Who is” privacy if at all possible. Any thoughts?

Cheers,

I just purchase through the people who host my website. It's part of my package.

Yeah I don't like my hosting company and I don't want to give them any more money at this point :) I did the deal just now, I ended up going with namecheap.com on a recomendation I got on the binrev forums. $8.88 and it includes whois privacy for free, I couldn't be bothered to look any further...

I had hosting through Earthlink and had registered my domain through them. The domain was actually through Melbourne IT, with Earthlink as a reseller. I had another domain registered directly through Melbourne IT.

When I went to switch web hosts, it took 3 phone calls to Earthlink and a total of 45 minutes on hold to get my domains repointed to the new host. It took 2 weeks to get everything switched over. The other domain registered through Melbourne IT took just minutes to switch. I logged in to their admin page and switched DNS servers instantly. It still takes a day or 2 for changes to propagate, but that's unavoidable.

Moral of the story: go directly to a registrar rather than your web host, unless you're REALLY sure you like them and want to stay with them. I'd register directly with Melbourne IT, personally. It's more expensive, but it's worth the money. You can also lock the domains so only you can change them, and get private registration if you want.
