"Google is preparing its own distribution of Linux for the desktop, in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business - desktop software.
A version of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as 'Goobuntu'."
Hahahaha, "Goobuntu". They have to do something about the name.

Maybe this will be the impetus for them to release linux clients for their software?

The article looks to me like a rework on rumors from early January when Google was supposedly announcing a Google OS at CES. Which, in turn, were all modifications of rumors floating around since Google's IPO in 2004. Google may surprise me, but I think it's unlikely that we will see a Linux-based, BSD-based, or any other type of operating system from them.
I'm also skeptical of anything The Register prints. They've always seemed to me like the Weekly World News of tech sites.

I remember back in 91 when WWN reported that "the alien" had backed President Bush. A week later the alien changed his mind and backed Clinton. The scandal!!!

Yeah no kidding, that name makes it sound like we're talking about something from a dumpster or something!

Who knows, maybe they will, maybe they won't. Maybe they'll just released some weird-ass Google version of Ubuntu and try to compete with Microsoft, it's pretty hard to tell what Google are doing these days, one day they say they're not evil, another day they censor Chinese search results and yet another day they talk about contributing back to the community of GNU/Linux which they've pretty much grown up on......

First they have to get their apps ported to linux unless they only let their programs run on "Goobuntu"

Kind of like Apple only let OS X Intel run on their hardware, which by the way, might be good for Linux, because if a typical Windows user is to choose between OS X and Linux, I'm pretty sure he'd choose OS X.
