Is it me or does it seem to run quite a bit faster? Wonder if Linc is still having crashes during PHP coding and testing?

I updated Firefox on my laptop at the office (running XP unfortunately). Anyway, when I did it broke my Spellbound spell checker extension.

Mine doesn't seem to upgrade by itself, unless it already did the upgrade without me knowing. How do I tell if it upgraded?

Help | About will give you the version number and Help | Check for Updates will force the update check. Then in the Options/Preferences pane under Advanced | Updates you can turn the auto update on or off.

Yeah it didn't update and the Help > Check For Updates is disabled (its gray and I can't click on it)

Try su'ing to root and running firefox from the terminal.

It will kinda work as root. It will let me click "search for updates" but it has been searching for the last 10 minutes and I restarted it and tried again but it doesn't get past searching. This might be a bug with Gentoo so I posted the problem on the forums. This might have something to do with the couple of patches for various things on firefox Gentoo uses.

Ok I couldn't get it to autoupdate no matter what I tried so I just got it from portage. It does seem slightly faster and less buggy. It hasn't crashed in the hour I've been running it!

BTW: The autoupdate might be a priviledge thing and it is still disabled.

Question: Why does firefox require so much memory? I have 1.5 running with 4 tabs, I don't have java or shockwave or any other plugins installed, and top shows its size in memory is 77 mb. Not much better for konqueror either. Not to mention it takes around 4 seconds to launch. (All running on freebsd by the way.)

Aren't there any compilation options or somethingI could use to speed things up? I personally find it ridiculous that my damn browser is taking up 15% of my system memory. I'd use dillo or something if it at least had ssl support.

Are you using KDE? (or maybe another window manager) Glib takes a while to load into memory if you don't use Gnome and theres not much they can do about that unless they use something other than GTK.

I was using fluxbox. Is it glib which takes long to load? Glib is just a collection of commonly used C structures afaik. Anyways, I can live with the launch time. How did we ever run a browser back in the days we only had 32mb system memory??

Lynx didn't have a GUI or javascript to worry about .I think I remember reading on the firefox bugzilla that Glib is why it takes so long to load and uses so much memory, but it could have been something else....
