I tell ya, if Microsoft delays Windows Vista into 2007, I'm quite confident that KDE 4.0 will be sitting in the bushes waiting for a chance to do an ambush, like a smilodon (Yeah Apple may have a Tiger, but we have something bigger, HAHA! Sorry guys just finished watching some BBC stuff )

I would be very surprised if Vista gets released this year. Probably early-mid 2007. The next stable release of Debian should be out before Vista! (December 2006)

Speaking of that, the server version of Vista are even further out in the future, and I tell ya man I just played around with CentOS, super smooth distro to set up a web server on, Debian, Red Hat and Novell are all releasing new enterprise products this year, and judging by the current versions, they'll be stoping everything Microsoft can throw at 'em, look can Windows Server 2003 run on a 450 MHz AMD K6 machine? NO IT CAN'T! Linux and BSD can!!

The next 12 months or so are definitely vital to open source and Linux adoption. Right now Firefox is gaining market share like crazy, but once IE 7 gets released officially (not beta), people are going to be more reluctant to switch. Same goes for Linux and Vista. If Microsoft can release a semi-secure operating system with lots of eye candy and games, Joe Shmo won't have any reason to move to Linux.

Well, that may be the case, until the crackers finds ways to brake Vista, maybe they will be cooperating with pirates and bang on the Vista betaas, and then the final version, who knows? The WMF exploit got sold for 4000 US dollars in Russia's black market.

Well, Windows Vista are gonna have some serious hardware requirements, and most non-experienced computer users I know, usually keep their computers for years and years, because they do what they need, and with Windows XP I think Microsoft added so much that there aren't really anything that the user would need. But you're right, most people will probably upgrade to Vista, because they will read about it in the newspaper, and only a small fraction will switch to Linux. What I think we need to get more of a chunk of market share is press, no honestly, we need to tell people about this great alternative called Linux, we need to demonstrate what KDE 4.0 will have to offer..... In that way Dell might receive calls sounding like "I've heard of this Lajnix thingy, do you offer that?" I think if they get enough, maybe they will say "Hmmm, these new developments sound interesting, maybe we should try it out as an experiment", yes Linux is very very easy to install on supported hardware, and I think most people who has somewhat of a logical sense can do it, but I think it's not there the entrance is for Linux, I think we need to have Tux sitting at a local computer store and waiting, because when people buy a new computer they're closer to this thought of needing to relearn a few things.

Who cares if other people adopt Linux. It works for me, and that's all I care about. A lot of people DESERVE Windows.

what I am waiting for is places like my daughters (she is in first grade) school trying to get organized for fundraisers so they upgrade their machines to vista.

not while I am on the technical committe. what the hell do first through eigth graders need microsoft office on their computers much less windows.

I realized something recently; MS has been promising an consumer-OS with the .NET framework installed since 1999, and we all know that 2000 and XP shipped without .NET. yet fedora core 4 afaik ships with Mono. Which means .NET is better suported on linux than windows.

That's an interesting thought, but isn't it Fedora Core 5 you're reffering to? Red Hat has been very clear that they don't like Mono.

This is correct. Fedora has announced Core 5 will ship with Mono in a few weeks. Red Hat still has no plans to ship Mono.

They're not saying. I've never heard anyone official say anything other than "we're not shipping it, we can't say why, but trust us because we have a good reason."

Some people have proposed that it's more likely to do with the fact that Mono is a Novell product. Red Hat doesn't want to help promote it and are betting on Java instead. I'm really not sure if I buy that. Red Hat will ultimately do what their customers demand, but that's not .NET quite yet.

It was originally a Ximian sponsored project, I doubt it's because of Novell that Red Hat is scared off, don't they include the Ximian Connector plugin that Ximian made and Novell GPLed?

Well, if Sun is considering using the GPLv3 for Solaris there might be a slight hope of them doing the same thing with Java, who knows? If that was the case, it would certainly be a good thing to bet on, because to my experience Java is more universal, platform wise, than .NET.
