;heads up: just got my wife an iaudio u3 2gb flash memory mp3 player (for valentine's day or whatyouwill). it was only fair, i broke her last one (msi megastick 256). the u3 is fresh out of the box tonight and at first blush it's a sweet little device (incredibly light!). i have yet to try it on my linux box. more later.

Iaudio makes nice stuff. My Iaudio5 is still humming along nicely. If I had the cash I'd pick up one that has video playback capability. Screw Apple!

I was going to get an x5, but then one of my dogs (I have 3) decided to go psycho and break off two of her canine teeth.

I originally had the iAudio M3 which was great but the remote was kinda annoying how small it was and I decided it was time for an upgrade and I got an X5L. I have loved it ever since, its much more sexy than an iPod IMHO and it can do crazy ass things iPods might be able to do with $200+ worth of accessories. The iAudio 6 looks awesome too so if you only need 4GB then wait for it to come to the US. I think it has everthing my X5 has (except for battery life probably).

BTW I still use my M3 as a portable harddrive so I can give it to my friends with videos and whatnot on it.

They're all mutts, but the one that broke her teeth this weekend is a husky/shepherd mix, and one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. The best we can figure is that she got her head stuck in the door and freaked out - we were out at the time. She's never done anything majorly destructive before (sure she's chewed stuff up due to boredom, but that's normal, right?). Her major problem (they all have a major problem or two) is epilepsy. So we were completely surprised when we came home to a broken door (it was already broken, but she'd ripped the piece of plywood I had used to patch it). I didn't notice she'd broken her teeth until hours later. I'm still shocked.

The vet is going to think we beat our dogs or something (we absolutely do not!) - a few months back, I had another dog in for two aural hematomas - no idea how he got the first (probably got it roughhousing with the other digs, I guess) but he wouldn't stop shaking his damn head after the first surgery (it got infected) and the second one swole up too. The only plus is that vets in NM are about a third the price they were in Cali.

Anyhow, the more I look at the iAudio, the more I jones for one. They all look pretty nice, and have been praised by several linux sites/mags. I am more of a hard-drive kind of guy though - if I did a lit of running, I'd probably go for a solid-state player, but since I mostly use my iPod for in my car and as a portable usb hard drive, I don't have a lot of need for shock-proofedness.

While this device does look sleek, I was wondering about actually watching video on the screen. It looks very small. You'll have to let us know how it works out on there. I see that it only support mpeg4. What mpeg4 format? Will it play apple's mpeg4 (quicktime)?

Having used both HD and Flash based players, I find it is a tough decision. While I found the iPod a piece of crap I must admit the size of the HD afforded me the ability to put all my cd's on there and have tons more room.

With the GP2X taking sd flash, I grabbed a 512 mb card which fit about 10 cd's worth of music on there. So I'd figure a 2gb would give one around 50 cd's. While that is a lot of music, it pales in comparision to a 20gb hd. But I guess that is the price to pay.

My "portable player" is a 512 meg flash drive. I listen to almost nothing but podcasts, so I only need enough storage for a day's listening. 512 megs holds 12 hours worth of listening, easily.

I rarely listen to an MP3 more than once, so a hard drrive based player would be a waste.

I load the thing in the morning, plug it into the computer at work, and put on my headphones. Cheap and effective.
