I think my computer has an evil spirit, or something. First, I had a network card just stop working for no apparent reason, now this.

I had sound set up and working perfectly in Slack and in KDE. Now today, I boot up and log in and sound is gone. Now last night when I closed KDE I still had XMMS open and paused, so I don't know if that could cause something.

When I started KDE XMMS was still open, but when I pressed PLAY a warning came up that I didn't have the sound card configured, or the sound output was incorrect, or something else had a hold of the sound card. So went into preferences and the output listed was oss, changed it to alsa (had used alsaconfig to set up the sound originally), and that didn't work. So I tried setting it to aRTs and then it worked. (Of course, I have never changed the settings in XMMS before.)

It is weird, the xine plugin in Firefox used to have sound, now it doesn't. Xine player straight does have sound. KDE sound theme seems to work too. Not really sure why some things work and others don't.

Any ideas?

sounds like your sound modules are not loading in at boot. Do lsmod |grep snd and see if the sound modules are loaded. If they are not you could try running alsaconf which should probe your system, setup the sound modules and edit modules.conf.

If that does it, I would try a reboot and see if the settings stick.

Looks like all the modules are loading correctly. Also Xine plugin in Firefox has now decided to work again. In fact all the sound seems to be working suddenly. I guess the evil spirit has left for a while.

These issues are catching me by surprise. So far my limited experience with Linux is that the system just always works, and nothing breaks suddenly. I expect that from my Window's boxes. Thanks for the command though, because it gives me another tool that I can use in finding out issues.

By the way read your blog about the "whiteboard" sound cool, but also sounds like something that is too set up intense for me right now. If they make it easier to set up and run then it would be even better.

So long as you have a jabber server to connect to that allows this service, it's pretty much a breeze.
