They don't support Linux on desktops or laptops, but there are plenty of resources, forums and FAQs for people who want to try.

Searching for "Linux" on their main site turns up a few links also. Believe me, I've tried to go to Dell's site and price a computer with Linux on it before and had no luck. Looks like they're making some progress.

I know that I should be happy that it is offered, but isn't that a little expensive for a non-M$ system? Especially if what Gomer_x says is true:

If people wanted to support it themselves, wouldn't they just buy a system, format and install it on their own? Or am I just not thinking correctly?

We're doing that anyway. There's no guarantee that any system will necessarily work with Linux, even if you build it yourself. The advantage of Dell is there is a dedicated user forum so you can verify how well a certain distro works on a given box. You can also look at the hardware versus a supported box and see if a certain piece is likely to work.

Personally I wouldn't buy a Dell because I don't want to spend the money on proprietary crap. I use a Dell at work, but someone else is paying to fix it, and it gets replaced every couple years.

At home I build my own systems from parts.
