Have any of you come across this / tried this new Mozilla suite called SeaMonkey?

I did a brief write up on this new feature it offers, called "Roaming Access", on my pesonal blog.

Kind of a cool idea.

Sounds cool I will have to try it out. Yesterday I installed it and it looked the same as mozilla but I guess it has some hidden functionality I did not see.

I have read about Seamonkey -- it's the new suite from Mozilla that is going to replace regular Mozilla suite soon. Pat V., in fact, added it to the Slackware -current /testing tree a couple of weeks ago and said that he might replace the mozilla suite in Slackware with Seamonkey. I have not tried it yet, though -- good write up on the roaming access. I did not know about that. Cool feature!

Why are they replacing Mozilla? Why can't they just update it?

I have no idea.... Maybe a different dev. team (?) But perhaps some more research in to why "SeaMonkey" and not simply an update to Mozilla will produce some answers.

The Mozilla Foundation has announced that there won't be any more official releases of the Mozilla Application Suite, but they will provide infrastructure for community members who wish to continue development under the new project name "SeaMonkey" (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonk ... 2005-07-02). The project has a new team that is independent of the Mozilla Foundation, cares about that application and that takes over the lead for its development.

The Mozilla roadmap was changed in 2003 and they decided to basically bring Firefox stuff into a full suite and I guess it was hard to go back and reimplement Firefox stuff into Mozilla.

Oh ok. Although I think the name SeaMonkey is kinda dull (I would have used WaterScorpion! ) but whatever thats irrelevant. I am transitioning my way to Opera from firefox since I can get the binary built using Qt so it doesn't screw up and it allows flash (Im on AMD64 and binary GTK programs have a weird display problem) plus it seems a little more stable (Gmail doesn't seem to crash it!). Maybe I will use SeaMonkey if it is stable and AMD64 Flash is farther in development.

Or a mermaid... have a well endowed animated mermaid bouncing up and down as the "busy" icon

I'll try it for a while to see how it performs. I'm kind of hooked on my Konqueror, but maybe I can use a combination of the two.

One tip about setting up Roaming Access... you may not want to do that for your Default SeaMonkey profile. I'm suspecting that if, for some reason, you don't have the profile directory at hand (Internet is down or your USB drive is at home) you'll get problems launching SeaMonkey. Will have to test this for myself.

Probably best to create a new user profile and leave Default as is.

As I remember, Mozilla was abandoned in favor of Firefox. They felt like "suites" like Mozilla and Netscape are outdated and there was no point in continuing.

Basically Seamonkey IS Mozilla, only supported by it's community. They couldn't call it Mozilla anymore, so they came up with a silly new name.
