OpenDocuments on the Web, Word Processing and Spreadsheets

Is interestng how OpenDocuments is really filtering and regulating the intentions of many companies for becoming the web office many people has thought. Right now OpenDocuments can be use and edit for word processing tasks, using Writely.com which was acquired by google some days ago.

IRows seems to be the next in target providing OpenDocuments for spreadsheet, so far they are able to save as ODF and soon full support would be available.

Soon we will have full support for OpenDocument both on the desktop (using OpenOffice.org or KOffice) or on the web, using Writely and iRows.

Just like OGG support it will be a long road for full adoption unless the big guys step up (OGG on the iPod, and ODF on MS Office). I'm all for helping it but theres only so much one person can do

Actually ODF has rapidly grew, so far there are 4 different support organizatiions, and is really having a big strenght and advocacy level. From articles on eweek and other tech sites to actually a voice on public administration.

SCALE was a big event for ODF where there were from workshops to government orientation sessions. The result of thiscould be other governments stepping in and also IBM and Sun are already behind the initiative.

I think the difference between ogg and odf is that with ogg, you have regular consumers buying iPods, and not noticing that they pay for mp3 support, and therefore see no reason to change, and businesses want DRM, which I don't think ogg supports, so they have no reason to change.

With odf, you have businesses and governments paying a lot of money for office suites and getting sick of the pains of document format conversion, who are tired of being locked into an office suite because of that hassle. So to me, the difference between ogg, where neither business nor consumers really see a big reason to change, and odf, where businesses and governments desperately want some sort of change, is significant.
