are there any smaller, simpler alternatives to gimp? I think gimp is overkill for someone like me, whose only real image-editting needs are scaling, cropping, and brightness/contrast adjustment.

Have you ever tried gpaint? I don't know which desktop you prefer, but for GNOME I find gpaint to work fine for simple image editing.

This sort of stuff is all supported with DigiKam. It's pretty "light weight".

DigiKam is great for the quick and dirty photo stuff. The red eye removal filter is my favorite since we all have light colored eyes in my family. We tend to look Satan and family in our photos.
