Being that I may be this Forum's 1st linux newbie.
I could be wrong, but I feel we need a "newbie" thread. I hope I'm not stepping on any toes by making a new thread.

Ok, so this might be "my" thread for asking questions at least until others join too.
That being said, I was wondering what I'd use this version of Debian for other then seeing how much I can do w/o running Window$ and still hang with my Win buds.
That alone is worth starting with, but I sometimes like to think in a forward fashion even if some of my buddies don't.
I already have OpenOffice, which I chose over my real copy of Office '97 as I only really use Word. Also I have Mozilla, but I've yet to make it my #1 choice.
I'm a late bloomer (5/99 I bought my 1st comp, $800, K6-400), and it was loaded with Netscape 4.5 which I used and updated until AOL screwed it up. I made the painful switch to IE and just got used to it.
I fear Microsoft after reading this: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html Granted, I read on the net or heard "stuff" from other tech shows I listen to, but this read just hit me hard and helped me to push myself into Linux.
Enough rambling and background, just point me to artists...ahhh programmers, samething, that have music-making synths that work in Linux for starters. I used to have some links, but they died with my other stuff I couldn't save before that crash. Poo.
I'm not a programmer, nor have I ever claimed to be. Loading up Reason 2.5 is as far as I go and even then I needed to buy a book.
Hey! I don't know how reason showed up on my HDD, it must have been an Elf or an Orc that loaded it for me.
Any help in this music making matter would be sooo cool.

Sorry if I'm a bit excited about venturing into Linux and acting like a kid in a candy shop, but it has been on my "to do list" for a few years.
Windows is so easy and I can be so lazy at times. Win XP is when I really started to wake up. Having to call Microsoft because I changed my hard drive was the last straw!
Apple is still too expensive for me as I perfer to build my own comps. Linux seems to be a good choice. I know I have allot to learn and that's what makes it exciting for me.

There's loads of neat stuff out there, personally I'm waiting for rosegarden to be a bit more stable and my machine to be a bit (lot) faster.
