I noticed Linc had mentioned on his blog that he saw the Ben Stein movie, "Expelled", and praised it. I'm really rather disappointed, as this movie has been blasted by the scientific and skeptical community for months now for being a complete and utter propaganda piece for Intelligent Design that completely ignores many, many facts.

The "controversy" out there regarding Intelligent Design is non-existent. Whatever controversy that exists is propagated by these anti-science films like Expelled. Scientists have long rejected Intelligent Design/Creationism because there is a lack of empirical evidence supporting it. ID is untestable by nature, and hence, is nothing more than pseudo-junk science.

The fundamental problem with intelligent design as science is that intelligent design claims cannot be tested. Scientific testing requires that there be some set of phenomena which are incompatible with your idea. No observation could possibly be incompatible with a claim that an “intelligent agent” (whom everyone recognizes as God) acted to, say, introduce information into a system. Untestable claims are not scientific claims. Regardless of their attractiveness as religious ideas (although many people of faith strongly reject intelligent design) intelligent design has not passed muster as science.

Thanks to propagandists like Ben Stein we are actually still debating this...

Wow. It's really depressing that we have to revisit this issue again. I'm sorry, but this *is* about religion, not science. The arguments being presented are rehashes of thousand-times-refuted religious arguments against scientific explanations of the universe. These are literally the same people who ran the Scientific Creationism scam in the eighties and nineties. Their arguments underwent selective pressure and evolved into the Intelligent Design Movement.
I'm not even convinced that Ben Stein even believes this crap. If he did, he would present a coherent scientific argument instead of relying entirely on anti-intellectual button-pushing and conspiracy theories to inflame the yahoos. These kind of tactics belong on right-wing AM radio, not in an honest scientific argument.
I am not trying to be nasty here, but I wonder how many of the people applauding at the end of the movie could pass even the most basic factual exam on the biology and physics involved in the issue? ...Anyone? ...Anyone?

I haven't seen Expelled, and for the most part I like Ben Stein, but this comment of his in a recent interview was a little over the top to say the least...

In an interview with the Trinity Broadcasting Network, Ben Stein said the following amazing thing in an interview with Paul Crouch, Jr.

Stein: When we just saw that man, I think it was Mr. Myers [i.e. biologist P.Z. Myers], talking about how great scientists were, I was thinking to myself the last time any of my relatives saw scientists telling them what to do they were telling them to go to the showers to get gassed … that was horrifying beyond words, and that’s where science — in my opinion, this is just an opinion — that’s where science leads you.

Crouch: That’s right.

Stein: …Love of God and compassion and empathy leads you to a very glorious place, and science leads you to killing people.

Crouch: Good word, good word.

So we have Linc as a unthoughtful Christian , I respect his own opinion, but come on Linc, your into technology , creationism is against technology par se.

I'm disappointed, I guess Linc isn't interested in debating this. According to his user profile he doesn't even visit these forums anymore. Hmmm.

its a shame i have always been of the opinion that having a forum means everyone can see a discussion going on opposed to an email just sent to the presenters. That's why i don't send emails to podcasts, i like everyone to see my opinion on whatever i have to say.

I think he is really busy at work and has not had much time to do much else.

Exciting times

I have been doing quite a bit of work lately with my LinuxForChristians website. It has kind of been neglected as of late, well, very much so I guess I have finally gotten around to getting things started correctly I think, by actually registering a domain, by setting up a better (or at least newer) website, and definitely by getting some commitment and involvement of other wonderful people to help.

It’s really neat to watch a website take off and I hope this one continues to do so. I am excited to see people using it and I am anxious to see where things will go.
