One of the pictures Chris DiBona showed at Ohio LinuxFest was a room full of rackmounted servers. Details on what they actually run are unavailable (he could only show the picture for 4 seconds), but it sounds like they're using off the shelf server hardware, not off the shelf PCs. They do rely on redundancy and good software rather than extremely fault tolerant hardware, though.
