I value what the man stands for, but christ, he's getting harder to have a discussion with every year. I mean, having arguments over how questions are framed during a discussion is just absurd.

I wonder what a discussion between Charles Manson and him would sound like.

Who didn't have an open mind? What I saw was a couple of people trying to understand the mess that is the mandriva structure and even someone who is a strong advocate could not clarify things with any certainty.

The article pinpoints exactly the problems with the mandriva structure.

Hmmm... if you're referring to me in this statement, I believe I asked if you could give me more specific information so I could give you a clear answer. I asked, "Are there any particular areas/features you'd like me to compare and confirm for you?" What I got in reply was, "No thanks I've lost any interest in pursuing this distro any further."

So, there you have it. Again, I'm not sure what more I can offer to you without being given some helpful feedback.

If you want me to generalize, then I'll generalize and say yes, Mandriva One 2007 is the same as PowerPack 2007 with some slight differences in the RPMs installed by default. However, if you've already made up your mind about it, then it won't really matter what I say from this point forward.

LOL. A person can only ask the same question so many times before losing interest. You can refer to the review you posted a link to for the complete list of questions a person might have about mandriva. How many ways can someone ask if the free versions are the same as the paid versions?

It's like asking your cell phone provider what an anytime minute means that is only good before 8am and after 8pm. They will give answers and act like they have already answered the question. But what they really want is for you to remain confused and buy a more expensive plan.

The point being that even after 4 pages of posts its still not clear what the difference between all the versions is. But your best bet is just to buy the powerpack.

Or download the 4 CD Mandriva One Free set.

This is PowerPack without Cedega, Cross Over, and LinDVD and other proprietary apps. I believe it also doesn't have a large portion of the server side stuff. Aside from that, you can get these packages via EasyRPM; Cedega and Cross Over are available from the vendor's own web pages. LinDVD is in the Mandriva club repositories, I believe, but I haven't gone to look to confirm this.

I'd really like to check this out but it seems the only download method is via bittorrent. I tried downloading the DVD and CD isos but there were no seeders available. I had ktorrent up all night and not one seeder appeared.

When you go to the download page, just scroll down a bit to find all of the mirrors that provide http and ftp downloads of the ISOs.

I just popped in the Mandriva Free 2007 dvd from the Linux Pro Magazine (Nov) on my old workstation at home. Overall very impressed. Installer is top notch. The system configuration tool was a snap. I seem to like it better than Yast2 ( seems faster).

3d desktop was super easy to setup. The wife just loves it

I have always been one of those Bah! Mandrake/Mandriva people until now. I Think I will keep this one around for a bit and play with it some . I still am partial to PCLinuxOS for my old Lappy though. I may give it a try on there as well

I'm glad that you like it, doublejoon. Mandriva has improved and are listening to their users and the community at large. It's nice to read that they've at least done something positive to change your opinion of them (for the better).

The package manager has improved in performance over 2006, for sure. Not as fast as Pacman, but it certainly is better than what it was in the 2006 release.
