linux mp3 device manager

I few years agos I said there will come a day where I put my mp3 player in it cradel at night and pick it up in the moring and listen to "The Linux Show" (I did not know of such a show but it was an example) on my way to work.

This moring I listened to the Linux LInk Show on my way to work. Thank you for making this day a reality. Great show!
To make things even better the first show I listend to you talked about the history of podcasting and one of my favorite apps MythTV.

I have two questions I hope you will ask your listeners.
1.) I have the Otis mp3 player from Audible.com when I plug it in to my gentoo box I get "USB device 8 (vend/prod 0x5b4/0x6001) is not claimed by any active driver" Have any of you listners been able to get this device to work not using the audible software. (I can get my usb mass storage drive to work fine on /dev/sda1)
2.) Assuming I get this to work or buy another do you know of any mp3 device managers that can upload to my player as part of the corn job.
