Open Source video card in the making

Post by Judland » Thu Jul 20, 2006 8:06 pm

Now this sort of news is nice to read... a new project that actually adds something important to the Linux and open source community.

Instead of creating and financing yet another version of the Linux OS and desktop, I wish someone like Mark Shuttleworth would put their money and effort into backing something like this; Something that Linux lacked and something we (as a community) could really benefit from.

I know many people like Ubuntu very much, but we've got so many Debian-based Linux distros available to us, I just feel the effort (and money) could have done so much more for Linux in general.

Even if this card doesn't have that good 3D performance I'm gonna buy it as soon as it's finished!
And regarding 3D acceleration, screw that, by the time this card is done I'll be playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on Wii.

I think it costs about 50 million dollars to engineer a chip these days, if Novell and Red Hat REALLY wanted to have graphics hardware available that had Free drivers, I'm sure they could put some cash into it. Hey, maybe even IBM and HP could lend a hand.

Ohhhhh, Judland is trying to start a flame here, isn't he?
Just kidding, I don't wanna risk upsetting Ubuntu people, so I think I better shut up about this particular one.

No flame war intended... it was just an opinion. :D If I offended anyone, please accept my apology.

I agree with you, those with the cash (IBM, Novell, HP, Sun, etc.) would certainly be a tremendous help to the project.

If any Executives from these organizations are reading this, please consider my remarks above. If you wish to contribute to the Linux community, we need this open source graphics card rather than another Linux distribution.

If Novell, Red Hat, IBM, HP and Sun each threw in 10 million, we'd have a budget in no time! :P

Hehe well, Novell just bought Ximian and SUSE instead of starting their own distro, and since have put a lt of money into stuff such as Mono, GNOME, KDE, etc.
Anyway, I'm sure the OGP is working with the kernel developers at some level, so that should be interesting to watch.

The Open Graphics Project has been around a few years. Their first product will be an FPGA based test board with programmable logic, some memory, and supporting chips. It'll be a PCI card that can be used to test and prototype a graphics card design, which is the first step in the process. It might be out by fall.

They're hoping to sell enough of these to generate the $2 million it will cost to fabricate an actual chip to begin production of a real card.

Thanks, Gomer. I really hope they succeed.

When Timothy Miller was interviewed on LUGRadio (S3E11) I seem to remember him saying they were expecting a big demand for the cards they're releasing this year. You and I won't buy one, but there are developers out there that will. I'm hoping they succeed too.
