Ubuntu Servers down

All Ubuntu servers have been down for hours now.

This sucks. I was planning on apt-getting Quanta Plus and give it a spin. They should definitely look at putting some back-up servers at a different location after this.

Yeah, maybe someone could come up with a way to mirror the entire distro at multiple sites. That way if ubuntu.com or Canonical ever disappears, all thier work could remain availible for people to continue to access at a different site.

That idea would probably be worth working on if someone has some free time on a Sunday.

Are you telling me that the Ubuntu distribution is reliant on just one set of servers? Aren't they being mirrored at all, somewhere else?

I mean, I keep hearing people talk about Ubuntu but is no one else providing mirrors for them?

If so, that doesn't seem to be a very good idea to me.

I read the digg story and it seems pretty goofy. Per the Ubuntu site (which is definitely up now), there are plenty of mirrors worldwide, for ISO download at least. It seem like just the Ubuntu web server and a few related sites were down.

From the comments on the story, it appears Ubuntu users just don't know how to switch to different download mirrors for their updates.

Hmmm... well, I thought it seemed to be a pretty easy problem to avoid. Just list a couple of alternate servers in the apt-get repository list, wouldn't you think (if there were official Ubuntu alternatives available)?

Even easier would be to have the package updater automatically choose a mirror from a list, which is what yum on Fedora does. Yum has a plugin interface, and someone has written a plugin that pings mirrors and chooses the fastest one.
