Well, I finally bit the bullett and upgraded my RH9 server!

Apologies that it's been a while since I was last on here, but I've been moving house - and you know how it is...

Anyway - last week I had a couple of free evenings so I finally upgraded my RH9 webserver to CentOS4.3, and I am well impressed to say the least.

The only problems that I had were related to my phpbb forum, and my lack of research before doing the rebuild. I thought I could just restore from the backup - how wrong I was!! Anyway, that's all sorted now.

The centos install went really well - I must admit that most of the config I did in the GUI to save time, but it was up and running within a couple of hours. I love the fact that when you are on the machine itself that you can choose between running a KDE or GNOME session when you login! Maybe other distros have this feature too - but I think this is great!

Also - I've discovered phpMyAdmin as a result of my phpBB issues, and what a great tool that is! If anyone here runs any mysql databases and hasn't used this tool yet, then give it a go. I was well impressed!

All in all, I am really happy with my server now, and I just can't believe that you can get an enterpise class OS for nothing!!

Thanks for the update. I have a server running Fedora Core 4, and I'm trying to decide between upgrading to Core 5 (since Core 4 is end-of-life) or switching to CentOS.

Do you know what versions of Apache and Python are installed by default? The only other package I need in a specific version is MoinMoin, which I will probably need to install from source anyway.

Hey, gordonmarkus, how did you install CentOS? I attempted to put CentOS 4.3 on a box a couple days ago with the DVD version, but when I select install from local CD-ROM drive, it says it can't find a proper installation medium. A bug, maybe?

Before you get to that point, there should be an option for a media check to make sure the DVD burned correctly. Did you do the test? I've installed after a bad test and had no problems, but you need to rule out a bad download or burn.

Personally I download the ISOs and either install from another partition on the hard drive or over the network using NFS. Haven't done a CD/DVD install of Fedora/Red Hat/CentOS for probably a year.

Hi there,

With regards to which versions of python and apache are installed by default, I'm afraid I don't know. As soon as the install was complete I ran up2date to make sure that I got all latest updates before doing any configuration.

As for how I did the install - I downloaded the 4 CD isos. Then I ran a check on them before actually doing the install. It's a bit boring, but I'm sure that it's time well spent.
