Love when a plan comes together

Post by Judland » Thu Feb 17, 2005 1:41 pm

I got tired of having to sit around and swap CDs when ever I wanted to back-up my Linux box. I also don't have funds for a tape drive or for those large USB "thumb" drives.

However, I did find a USB hard drive enclosure on eBay for $30.00 CND.

It arrived yesterday afternoon, so last night I spent a little time setting it up. I loaded an older 10 GB hard drive I had lying around into the box, then plugged it in to my USB port. A few seconds later, Kanotix put a USB device icon onto my KDE desktop. Actually, it put three icons on my desktop; one for each partition it found.

The hard drive still had an old W98 partition on it and a linux / and swap drive. So I opened up QTParted and reformtted the drive as one Linux / partition. Now I have a 10GB USB drive which I can use to back-up my system files (and one icon now for the entire drive).

It works great and was a cinch to set-up. Talk about plug and play! Tar and gzip works spendily with it and I don't have to be around to swap anymore CDs! Now all I have to do is set things up so that my backups run every evening automatically.

Thank you, Kanotix!
