Just listening to episode 68 talking about video editing and DVD authoring.

I thought i would chime in with all the applications i have found in this area as i am a keen Video capturer (is that a word?) and editor.

Dave,
Thanks for the link. I've been on the site in the past and it's a great place for video/techies to give advice and chat. One app you didn't list was dvdbackup which is command line. It will rip the entire contents of a dvd to the hard drive. I've used in conjunction with dvdshrink and k3b. My personal favorite dvd ripper/backup is lxdvdrip. Does everything in one fell swoop. I've haven't had the chance to work with kino and qdvdauthor as much as I'd like. I'd also like to try out dvdstyler. Marcel Gagne did a web article on this app a couple weeks back.

Yes i have heard you mention dvdbackup on the show but it wasnt in any RPM repository i have listed in ym system so thus laziness has prevented me to install it. What so its a kinda DVDDecrypter ???

lxdvdrip sounds like DVD::rip which is Java based and works very well. It uses Transcode as its encoding engine and sometimes has some strange (unwanted) effects ie flipped image, dis-colouration. I would like a DVD ripper that uses MEncoder as its engine, be much faster and more reliable IMO.

qDVDauthor is very easy to use and makes good DVD menu's. I have found it more intuiative to use then DVDstyler, although reading Marcels article they sound identical in their use.

Yes, DVDbackup is kindda like DVDdecrypter, rips the whole disc:

It uses a combination of streamdvd & transcode to rip. Vamps for re-encoding dvd's greater than 4.7 gig. Every copy I've done looks & sounds perfect. So far I've found 1 movie which it couldn't copy. BTW, the same movie couldn't be copied in dvdshrink in windows & linux w/wine.

I just haven't had the time with work and my 17 month old son to get more into the video editing/dvd authoring. I have to try kino on my newer 2.4 ghz box. I'm sure it will be a better experience than on my old 800mhz machine. Lately in linux I've been playing with mythtv and bblog on a spare box.

Gotta find some time

I know the feeling. But DVD editing is something with a high priority for me so have managed to do a bit.

lxdvdrip sounds good, very similiar to DVD::Rip though, but i'll check it out.

i couldnt get dvdbackup or lxdvdrip to compile on my system and havent looked back into it.

I can say i did do our teams season DVD's all in Linux. Only thing i didn't do was the initial "capture" (its really a transfer as its Digial-to-digital) from my Cam through firewire in Linux but in Windows. I dont know whats up with my firewire, it worked once and thats it. Havent tried so many things!

Anyway what i used was.
encode2mpeg : for CLI encoding to mpeg2 from work

avidemux2 for putting in a DVD TS container. (encode2mpeg was ment to do that, but qDVDAuthor wouldnt accept them)
qDVDAuthor for the menu's and compiling to .VOB files etc.

And of course k3b for burning.

So far only one bloke had troubler playing back on his Standalone DVD player.

Well I finally got around to importing some home videos with kino and doing a run through with DVD Styler. In a word, it works. I was able to import a video and edit it with kino (which is much improved since the last time I played with it). Then I fired up DVD Styler and was able to import the mpeg video and create a default menu with some buttons. The DVD I burned worked flawlessly in my 4 year old Sony player. Granted the video was only 5 minutes long but this was just a test run. I will attempt to do a 60 minute home video and create a fancier DVD with some music added. I will share my results on the show and possibly do an article & LUG presentation. I might have 1 less reason for booting into windows. It's getting there folks!

It's good to hear people are getting this to work. Video editing is one of the last things I use Windows for. Pinnacle Studios on Windows XP is a crappy solution for video editing, but it gets the job done. I'd be really glad to move to Linux for all this, but so far I haven't been able to invest the time in getting it to work.

I'll try to be encouraged by the fact that other people are getting this to work. Maybe one day soon I can spend a day getting this together. I've got at least 100 gigs of video sitting on an NTFS partition that needs to be edited and burned to DVD.

You can do most everything in Avidemux2.

Give it a whirl. "mean" is making releases pretty frequently now with improvments everything.

If the video is already tripped etc, look into 'tovid'

I went from MiniDV tapes to authored DVD's with labels all in Linux (besides the ieee1394 capturing, some reason it just wont get going on my system; although its meant to be the easiest part of the process under Linux)
