New "revolutionary" Linux OS - Ulteo

Post by Judland » Thu Dec 07, 2006 9:39 am

I must be really getting cynical in my old age.

I see that the first alpha release of Ulteo (a new Linux OS developed by one of Mandriva's founding fathers, Gaël Duval) is available for downloading and testing.

The Ulteo website describes the new OS as "new concept of an easy-to-use open-source operating system which could change the way we all use computers."

I just visited the website and looked at the first available screenshot. It's appears to be another customized KDE desktop. :?

Okay, granted, Ulteo is in early stages of development. But what's the new concept that is could change the way I'm using my computer? I don't get it and I don't see anything (at least at this stage) what would motivate me to try Ulteo.

From what I can tell, it's yet another Debian based distro. that uses a package manager called "Yuch" and has a deamon that actively connects you to the Ulteo servers to check for updates, and runs KDE. What's so revolutionary about it? Please tell me.

UPDATE

Okay, from what I've read, "Yuch" isn't a package manager - at least as I understand it - but a method of installing the OS as a LiveHD (what ever that means).

Ah, just found some more details on this project...

Sounds to me like the innovation isn't in the "use" of the computer system, but in its administration. It's a "centralized" approach of system administration and sounds like you'll need some good bandwidth available in order for it to work.
