Torrent question re: IcePodder

Post by Spankminister » Fri Dec 29, 2006 12:11 pm

Hey everyone, as you probably know, I'm working on making some improvements to the podcatcher that will hopefully rise from CastPodder's ashes =) Torrent support is a big feature that I want to have working, and it currently only works if there's no timeout to the tracker, and the user can't dynamically update things like max upload, when to stop seeding, etc. On top of that, the BT libraries in the source are not the latest ones, and upgrading would take a bit of work anyway.

So I'm putting this out there for consideration:

What about using external programs to handle the RSS torrents? The default could be something like btdownloadheadless (or btdownloadcurses... I usually use the latter, but does anyone know which would be better for a program to fork off as a child process?) But it would be even simpler for IcePodder to send it to another BitTorrent client, and send the next torrent when the first one's done.

So, I'm interested in hearing how most of you have your torrent setups-- do you constantly keep Azureus running in the background, do you usually use the console options like btdownloadcurses, or the default BT client? Do you usually cap the upload pretty strictly, and/or set it to automatically stop seeding after a certain point? Rather than building torrent support into IcePodder itself, I wonder if keeping BT functionality external would make it more future-proof, as well as not interfere with people's existing setups. I know that I manually cap all of my torrent uploads, it would be a pain if I had to worry about splitting that with my podcatcher as well.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Spankminister

How is progress on icepodder now ?

A feature request : Something that can work text based and with a gui ... best example i can think of is gftp or the smart package manager.

Another great reference: Raggle

Hopefully you will make CastPodder usable, I currently don't like it because it creates a directory in my home and won't let me change it and the tray icon makes it look like someone puked in the corner of my screen. Thanks.
