Have to take issue with Russ's take on Linux driver problems

Post by greggh » Thu Feb 01, 2007 3:58 am

I think it was unfair of him to place all the blame for many hardware driver problems in Linux on the OS and poopooing the idea that it's the hardware manufacturers that are mostly at fault here. The comparison to Windows and virus problems just didn't make any sense. The fact is that every manufacturer spends alot of time writing drivers for Windows and Mac, and they put very little effort into the drivers to make it work on Linux. I don't agree with his take that to point to the hardware makers as a big part of the problem "is diverting blame" as he says. Why he wants to absolve the hardware makers and blame Linux is strange and wrong headed IMO.

I hear where your coming from, hardware vendors are in business for the same reason microsoft are, to make huge profits. Hardware vendors do need to give out there specifications order for them to be written and maintained.

An operating system, whatever it may be is basically a plot of land to build on.
Do you blame the soil when the roof leaks ? no you don't , you blame the person who did not use proper sealing or whatever job they did not do properly. If the wallpaper comes off in the bedroom , do you blame it on the soil, of course not.

I am be no means saying every OS has a prober foundation , as thats complete rubbish, as evidence is shown.

There is something i do preach to whoever asks will my hardware work on linux, i tell them the vendor makes them for windows ,(presuming there a windows user) and all the technical details are hidden from you, but on linux, its very different , they do not write drivers and our unwilling to give instructions in how there hardware works. After that whoever i am speaking to sees the situation different, They no longer think everything is done by microsoft. When it comes to issues like viruses , there not wrong in thinking its the OS .

I personally think the lack of decent prevention against viruses, spyware etc is done on purpose in order for third-party to make money.
They was a case with vista not allowing third parties to write anti-virus software, as far as i know thats no longer the case. In other words virus creators please continue, our adopters need to write anti-virus software.

Mac osx do not have the same problem, not just because its unix underneath but because there are not third party anti-virus vendors for the mac.

I was talking to a friend whose fathers friend or something like that , developed some kind of biological product that does improve upon something in the science field, he does not know about the detail, but whatever it was, it was revolutionary. What happened to him after was what always happens, a big company paid him a lot of money to own the technology then patient it, and never release it, because products that are good are not good for fat profits, so we will keep it but not release it.

This happens all the time in the pharmaceutical world, don't bring a cure for viruses like aids, instead feed the population with yet more drugs, give them 10 different prescriptions that work for a little while instead one drug that cures the illness.
I am not saying for one moment there is a cure for aids, it was just an example that happens with other illnesses or even the common cold.

There are lots of alternatives to oil than destroying and raping middle eastern countries, but thats too simple, we gotta show our dominance, we gotta expand our share holders
pockets, cause strife for the unfortunate ..

There are plenty of windmills to give enough power to certain large states in the us, but its not as profitable as oil baby.

microsoft is only the same , why make a perfect product when something half made will do, especially when 90% of computer users use our junk.
There are some real decent hackers working for them, i find it very hard to believe they think there making a great product opposed to making a living.

A funny vista story:- My brother has installed it on his machine, so he downloads the latest ati drivers for vista, clicks the install , about a quarter way through the install, the machine decides to reboot , so after hitting continue at boot because it complains about not being shutdown properly, he gets back into vista, and his machine is using something like a standard vesa driver, real slow when moving and resizing windows.
He was annoyed, i was laughing.
