OpenSuse 10.2 Samba WTF

So I decided to try out 10.2.

The install was longer and more tedious than it needs to be but lo and behold I finally am at the desktop. Very nice. Actually much snappier than Kubuntu and MUCH MUCH nicer to look at.

I have an xp box with some shares on it that I need to be able to access. In Kubuntu this was a simple click on the samba shares icon in konqueror and off i go.

So far in Suse this has been a no go. Anytime I access smb:/ it says it can't and it might be a firewall issue. I turned off the firewall..same problem. I've tried configuring samba in yast and kde and it's still a no go. I don't really want to setup samba server I just want to be able to read and write the shares on the xp box and print to its printer.

Troels? Anyone?

Well scratch that. A reboot has seemed to make everything right with the world again

I am pretty shocked at just how snappy the desktop is. Very nice.

I guess Microsoft is contagious!

First Apple, now Novell, hmmmmmm.......

What do you think of the new KDE menu?

I'm not a big fan of it in it's current form. As a concept I like the idea of customizing a view that you see first when you click on it. I just don't like how it's implemented.

Not enough can be seen in favorites without scrolling. I'm constantly switching tabs on accident. Finding things in the application tab is not fun.

Is it configurable at all?

Open up YaST, go to Security and Users, select Firewall and set Service Start to Manually, hit the Stop Firewall Now button and click Next, and it should be totally disabled, a little cludgy, yes, but it works.

You can make the menu a little bigger by using the mouse to pull the upper right corner of it, which helps a little on the scrolling stuff.

On configurability, you're right, it's a little fixed, but I think the reason is that it's still relatively early code, for openSUSE 10.3 I know you will be able to disable the hover thing and make it switch tabs by clicking (I subscribe to the opensuse-commit list).

Personally I really like this menu, specially like the Favorites thing, really makes my life easier because I use a shitload of apps.

Well, if Novell is willing to fork everything that will go GPLv3, shortly after the license is finished, to make sure that they have GPLv2 versions available for them to use to satisfy their shareholders with, and risk ENORMOUS amounts of bad press from the free and open source community.

I personally highly doubt they're gonna do this, because look at the list that they would have to fork and maintain by THEMSELVES: glibc, coreutils, gcc, grub and basically the entire GNU part of GNU/Linux. In addition to the GNU OS parts, they would have to fork samba, and get this, GNOME is part of the GNU project. I doubt that FSF owns all the copyrights for GNOME, but as far as I know, both GTK and GNOME uses "GPLv2 or later" licensing, so the GTK and GNOME release managers can just change that to "GPLv3 or later" and then they have basically put custom-made "handcuffs" around Novell's balls!

Once you invest heavily in a desktop, it's very painful to de-invest yourself.

Why wouldn't there be? OpenSuse is a community project that does not fall under the Novell/MS deal as I read it. If you use OpenSuse you are not a customer of Novell.

This issue is what will the next version of SLES/SLED look like?
