MythTV updates

Lots of stuff going on with MythTV. First is the Knoppmyth people are selling pre-configured Hi-def MythTV boxes here:

Pretty damm expensive! In my opinion they should be no more $300 for standard def and maybe $500 for Hi-def. It needs to be competitive with Tivo otherwise it will be just be a very small niche item. They're supposedly coming out with front-end only systems in the near future. The front end system should not be more than $200. If it wasn't so damm risky and I didn't have a family (with responsibilities) I might be willing to do my own startup and offer cheaper MythTV boxes. I'm sure it could be done cheaper than what these guys are offering it for. Pick a standard hardware configuration and get the parts directly from the manufacturers.

In other news a new California based start up is going to be offering a subscription for the programming guide and additional features for MythTV:

What makes this different than the free zap2it programming subscription? You don't have to do a survey (every several months) and these guys will be taking the money they make and do development directly for the MythTV application. Subscribers will able to vote for whatever feature plug-ins they want to be incorporated into MythTV. Sort of like what Cedega does with enabling new windows games for linux. My first choice would be a simple 1 step burn to dvd process where the commercials are automatically removed and chapter indexes created at the commercial return points. Currently burning your shows is not that easy but doable.
