Hey TLLTS people, so I wonder if you guys want to join the FSF campaing to encourage to play OGG. The free open standard format that we all cherish.
I have heard from other podcasts ...ehem... LUGRADIO..... bashing the FSF for not doing much beside ranting.
So they just started this campaing which I think is a good idea. TLLTS being the premier linux podcast out there should join this campaing just like LinuxReality has.

Joining the campaign is the easy bit. Acting on it is another. As a listener, I chose my formats depending on the device capability.
If the hosts of these shows really want to make a point about formats, drop the MP3 versions. It can be awkward taking a position saying 'MP3's are wrong for these reasons' and then choosing to provide that same format. If the content producers continue to provide the closed alternatives, the general public has less of a reason to make or demand any changes.

The mp3 version is crippled the OGG version has more content. This will mantain the number of listeners but will reward the one that choose OGG.

I think we all know that the mass public really has no interest in adopting Ogg Vorbis at this point. There is very little content available in the Ogg format, and the biggest portable audio player in the world doesn't support it whatsoever.
IMO, this campaign is just as futile as "Bad Vista" was. It's preaching to the already converted, and the only people who are talking about this are people like us, who already use Ogg Vorbis. The masses will come when there's good reason to.

Unfortunately, I don't use ogg - I'd love to, but there are too many real-world concerns for me to be able to. Open but almost completely unsupported is almost as bad as proprietary from a pragmatic standpoint. I do think ogg sounds better. It just sounds like shit on my iPod, my home stereo, my garage gym cd/mp3 player, my car stereo, etc unless silence is your idea of quality audio - you get the point. A while back, I was looking to switch away from my iPod for ethical reasons - now it's pretty obvious I'll be using it until it dies because of monetary reasons, and also, frankly, because it's working just fine. Just not with ogg.
I agree with wally that this is more or less a feel good event for FOSS lovers than an actual world moving crusade. I'll still sign up, though.

It depends on what the content is honestly. I know that for me, listening to the MP3 has given me all that I need of the show. Whatever the bonus content might be, I've never seen it discussed. So where's the allure? I have to say that it's not really 'crippled' as you suggest.

Yes, I have. It, wasn't what I'd consider usable. Now, it's probably been a year since I tried, but my understanding at the time was that they were having some major issues with the 3G and didn't expect that to change. The 3G isn't even listed on their front page:
the rockbox homepage wrote:Apple: iPod 4th gen (grayscale and color), 5th/5.5th gen (Video - 30GB and 60GB models only), 1st gen Nano and Mini 1st/2nd gen (Nano 2nd gen and 80GB Video 5.5th gen are not supported)
My main issues were the interface was buggy - it crashed back to reboot frequently or froze, it dusted my battery in about half the time (or even less) than the apple firmware, and there were some seriously weird issues with playback. I might give it another spin at some point, but my point about the topic at hand remains the same - ogg, as good as it is, is more trouble than it's worth to me at this point in time.

So the bonus material is the same as the main material without the sound sorted out and no interviews? I'll stick with the MP3's.*
Rockbox, as has been noted, has issues that I believe still linger. I tried it about six months ago and wasn't all that impressed. Without content to push me towards OGG on a portable player, it's not worth the downsides on my iPod.
*Just so this isn't taken as bashing the show, here's a suggestion. Perhaps use the bonus material time to interview/talk with various people in the community that want to call up pre- or post- show.

Actually, there is some of that content on there. Pre-show stuff with the guests, sometimes we talk with other people before the show.
Most of it is goofing around or non-tech related as when it starts to get tech related prior to the show we usually try and hold off until the show starts.

Maybe you should advertise that on the main page. "Download the Ogg to hear Allan cover all your favorites!"
