Are you a picker or a sticker?

Terrible title, I know. I was listening to LUGRadio last night and their discussion about Distro's adding specific tweak to enhance the experience between their Desktop and Server versions and similar technologies and whether this is a good thing. While I find the question very interesting, I'm not going to weigh my opinion on that here. Perhaps that is better off in the LUGRadio forum thread:

Anyway, what I was curious about is whether people tend to stick with a specific flavor of applications. For instance, do you use all gtk based apps or all qt or do you mix and match? If you use KDE, do you stick with the KDE suit of apps or do you run rhythmbox and/or gthumb instead of amarok and digikam?

I run a mixed bag personally and have, in most cases, not completely settled on a final choice in the long run. While I prefer fluxbox, windowmaker and gnome, I find it difficult to settle strictly on the gtk offerings for some applications. Hands down, I think Konqueror beats the pants off most file managers. I also prefer amarok as a music collection application at work, but as I don't use my systems at home to play music like at work, I find myself using beep media player more than anything; except for the intro and closing of the tllts where I use rhythmbox because that is where the playlists are and was the easiest to just drag and drop for me.

For an image manipulation program the Gimp wins it for me hands down and I prefer inkscape for vector. My text editor of choice is jedit which is java based.

I've not been turned off at all by cosmetic differences in the display of applications from different tool kits. I do wish, however, a bit more effort was put into populating the window manager or DE menu properly with applications generally outside the included apps for said DE or WM. For instance, I've noticed some qt apps do not get placed in their proper categories in the gnome menu under ubuntu and end up under the other category. Ah, but that is just nitpicky!

KDE 4 LIFE here. Generally speaking, if a qt version of an app exists, I'll use it unless the gtk version is much better or no similar qt app exists. Off the top of my head, I use avidemux, grip and acidrip. OTOH, I use amarok, k3b and kmail, and would regardless of which desktop/WM I chose to use. I'd say that limiting yourself to a certain subset of apps just because your desktop of choice uses one toolkit versus another is kind of counter to what using linux is all about - choice.

I'm a KDE addict! I personally try to use Qt/KDE apps all over the board, because I find them to, in most cases, be quite a bit faster and better performing, and in many cases I also find them to simply be better. I do use a few GTK apps here and there, I have Firefox which I use a few times a day (I prefer Konqueror for my web browsing), Azureus which I'm also addicted to and use 24/7 (Literally!), and I use Thunderbird like once a day (To check an old email account I have not used in years).

To sum it up, I try to use Qt/KDE applications all over the map, but there are one or two notable exceptions, pretty much the only one being Azureus, for BitTorrent stuff, and Firefox for the occasional retarded "Made for IE" web page (I run into maybe three a day).

I am definitely a picker , i have installed on this box qt 3.x, qt 4.x , gtk 1 , gtk 2, fltk , wxWidgets , swing , awt , lesstiff, tk , windows api via wine . That might be more but thats what i can think of at the moment.

I mostly stick the the KDE qt apps. Most of them run the fastest on my machines and I favor them anyway. There are a few exceptions with Firefox, Opera, Audacity, and OpenOffice.

I'm a Gnome user and stick with gtk apps for the most part. About the only qt apps I use are k3b and Amarok, both of which are phenomenal applications regardless of what they are written in.

I'm a GNOME user, myself, so I generally use GTK applications, although it really doesn't make much difference to me. My most common day to day apps are Firefox, Azureus, Pidgin, MPlayer, VLC, and GVIM, although I don't hesitate to use a QT application like Amarok or K3b if no alternative exists. For me, functionality trumps cosmetics, I use what works best, even if it doesn't mesh visually with my desktop.

Although I don't use GNOME, I am a GTK sticker for sure. I can't think of a single Qt app that I use, and in fact, I usually don't even install KDE.

I use kde. 90% of the time, I only have 2 "GUI" apps open at a time: Firefox(gtk of course) and smplayer(qt). If I need to use another gui app, they usually tend to be gtk. However, I spend most of my time in the command line using mrxvt, a tabbed rxvt using only xlib(no qt/gtk).
