Helio: I'm confused...

Post by davijordan » Wed Apr 09, 2008 12:07 pm

I was looking at the helios site and downloaded their cd. (I do not have a ps3 but who knows. It says there software is just a light server. In the installation you have to have the ydl5 cd also to get it installed. My question is that there are so many tools in linux to do this type of thing, what are the advantages/disadvantages? Will the server run in the back ground while games are being played? Also ydl just came out with version 6. How will this affect your software?

I think you mis-read. You can do an install using the cd you downloaded burned to a cd/dvd or you can grab their bid and use the yellowdog linux 5 dvd to do this install. You put the helios bid on a flash drive and point the ps3 to that then insert the yellowdog disc. I think this way you don't need the helios cd.

This technology is specific for the PS/3 using the cell process and PPC architecture. Unless you are running PPC it probably won't do you any good. Even more, I'm not sure if cell processor is required also.

I'm not sure it will work properly with YDL6 as they based their system on YDL5.

Finally, I am not an expert on PS/3 Linux but I think you either run the PS/3 or you run Linux, not both simultaneously. I could be wrong though. My understanding is that you would not be able to run a server from Helios while playing a game.

Thank you for the explanation. It is cool. I have only g3's anyway and I think yellow dog stopped supporting them in ydl5 I am told. I use only debian based distros on them now. when I do use them. I had and old neige g3 i was converting with debian, but he ps bit the dust during the install. oh well I needed the ram, cdrom and hd some where else anyway. I am no longer confus-e-us.

You are not wrong, that is indeed the case.

I appreciate all the input. We have too may toys so to speak anyway, I do not plan to get a ps3. You know someone is going to ask every linux user about it. That is what I needed to know.
Thanx again....
