It's been expected for months, now Asus has announced its Eee PC T91 convertible tablet ripe for a fresh Windows 7 tossing. The 2-pound (right, two!), 1-inch thick tablet features an 8.9-inch LED backlit touch panel riding atop Intel's Z520 Atom processor. It also features a TV-tuner and built-in GPS. No other details yet but it won't be long.
Very interesting things happening with these netbooks. Netbooks is a stupid name for them anyway. The fact is is that these are small, light, and easy to carry Notebooks. It's what they used to call ultra-portables, and what people use to pay a hefty premium for. The fact is that the current state of technology now allows for smaller to be cheaper. The established computer industry hates that fact, but it's true. We are entering a great new age of super small increasingly powerful and very cheap mahines with very low profit margins. You don't like it Intel? Well f**k you. I'm sure VIA with their Nano will be happy to take us forward, if you try to start to play games with the development of the Atom and limiting it.

I only wish there was a Linux option with these. But alas.... I fear the touch screen technology may be woefully behind under Linux. Then again, maybe it takes a hardware manufacturer to get the specs necessary to produce proper drivers.
We shall see where this leads. Of course the delivery of these devices is dependent upon Windows 7. Will it be out on time? That's a damn good question.

I can't understand the interest over touch screen technology for the home consumer use. While it has valid uses for ATM machines, gas pumps and gambling casinos, but for home or laptop use? I don't see the appeal.
Linux Mint 9 Gnome, Ubuntu 8.10 Easy Peasy , Open Suse, Windows XP PRO and others.

I wish that I could get my touch screen to work on my tablet. I've been running linux on it since I have had it. But it would be cool to be able to draw or play some games with just the pen. It's not a touchscrene actually it is a tablet pc.
