Check out the first comment after the article. I think that guy is spot on. Apple controls the software, they control the hardware. How are they giving back to the F/OSS community? I will never buy an Apple product. Never! They are worse than M$. At least M$ doesn't hide their intentions.

I don't think Apple would port anything over to Linux being in the position they are in now; with a smaller percentage of the desktop.
For apple to do this would legitimize Linux as a viable alternative to OS X and thus make their hardware less appealing, since you need their hardware to use OS X. So why pay apple prices when you can do the same thing on Linux? It won't happen.
Face it, ease of use is Apple's claim to fame. Bringing this quality to Linux is against their interest.
Apple's support of the MS platform is out of necessity. They realize the 800 lb gorilla must be fed; thus I'm sure their support for iTunes, the iPod and Quicktime on MS is done so begrudgingly.
I've a mixed bag of feelings towards apple. They make some good hardware and OS X is not that bad. While I prefer Linux, I'd much rather use OS X than Windows anyday. I'd really wish they'd give more back to the community; but I also recognize that they do contribute.
When I hear a person is buying a new computer I always recommend Linux first and then follow up with OS X. I strongly advise against purchasing anything with Windows on it.

I bought an old imac for my daughter to use in these early years.
Guess what I ended up putting ubuntu on and my daughter uses it instead of os9 or osx a lot more..
anyway I didn't invest much in it so it will serve it purpose while my daughter is in grade school -
one thing I think that apple could do is at least release a driver or something for their old airport cards that they don't make anymore -
I mean why not they don't support os9 or anything below jaguar anymore and osx runs like a dog or not at all on some of these Imacs so Linux is the perfect choice for this hardware - it still is snappy - you still need 128/256 memory but it is very usuable.
if they had a driver for the airport card then I could really take advantage of it's all in one mobility and move it around the house. But I am not going to buy an old airport card if it isn't supported on my favorite os.

Apple will not release a driver because that would mean that Linux could use it. They don't even want to say the word 'Linux' because that might make people research it or even try it out. Apple wants it to only run on Macs so it can build up a monopoly. There biggest goal is to make a huge Monopoly. Look at the iPods, the iTunes music comes in a DRMed format only iPods can use (although others might be able to play it now). They want to be Microsoft but just not look like Microsoft.
