Doom 3

Post by CptnObvious999 » Mon Dec 26, 2005 5:17 pm

I have a $35 gift card for bestbuy and I couldn't think of any electronics I need that are under $35 except for a audio splitter so I'll probly get Doom 3 as it is native Linux. However on bestbuys site is says the platform is Windows, do I need to buy a version specifically for Linux or does the Windows CD also work with Linux? This will be the first time I've played a commercial game on my PC in a long time 8)

You pretty much need to buy the Windows version. There is a download on the Doom 3 website for the Linux client, but you need the data files and such from the CD. I believe this is the same thing for Quake 4 and most games that come out from the bigger name developers.

Thats what I thought because when I emerge it, it asks for a data CD. Thanks hopefully I will be able to run it decently as my Graphics Card is far from awesome, plus the Linux version isn't as fast as the Windows versions (despite Linux being faster) so it should run at 800x600 at least.

As you can tell from my signature, I have an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 with 128mb of video memory, and it's barely playable in windowed 800x600 resolution. As long as your video card has atleast 128mb of memory, and is fairly newer than mine, it should run alright in low resolution, with all the effects turned off. I'd install the demo before buying the full retail version and make sure it runs well enough, myself.

Good idea its emerging now. The demo is 463MB! If the demo is that big I wonder how many GBs the actual game will be

I'm pretty sure you need a card with Direct X 9 support in hardware to play Doom 3 well. It scales just fine, though, and plays OK in lower resolutions. I've cranked the detail settings up all the way, and although it looks better, it's not that much better.

My Geforce FX 5600 Ultra with 128 megs of memory plays it just fine in 1024x768, although I haven't tried in Linux. Personally I think the demo might be enough, since the game itself is really pretty redundant.

Well the sound was very funky at first but I just added the "+set s_driver oss" to the command and it worked. The graphics were fine at medium detail and 800x600 (the frame rate got too slow at 1024x960). I have two other questions. What other native linux games are there? And how do I set the niceness level automatically for a game? Doom 3 has good graphics but seems too much like a horror game than a fun first-person shooter. I like RTS games but there doesn't seem to be many native linux ones (I would buy Darwinia if Bestbuy had it)

Some of my favorite Linux Gaming resources:

http://linux-gamers.net/ - Awesome site for HOW-TOs, Demos, Games, and other free goodies.
http://www.3ddownloads.com/index.php3?d ... inuxgames/ - Good place for free commercial game demos
http://www.linuxgames.com/ - Another good Linux Gaming site
http://www.tuxgames.com/ - Good place to buy commercial Linux games (they even have Darwinia)
http://www.opengl.org/applications/linux/games/ - Fairly good list of commercial, GPL-ed, and Freeware Linux games

Pretty much everything Id, and Epic releases gets a native Linux port, but they mostly just make FPS's. I'm sure there's a few free GPL-ed RTS games floating around out there.
