And regarding hardware DVD players, I still have to blog on this... for christmas, I bought an IODATA HD network DVD player:

It is great, and there is unofficial open source server software that runs on Linux.
Finally, on playability of Theora video on different platforms... it is one of the best ways to embed video in web pages because there is a java applet:

The only downside of the applet at this time is lack of pausing or seeking -- I read they are working on that. Alternatively, one can make a decent Flash Video in Linux and use a free flash player, and with some additional effort you can allow it to seek and pause with mixed results, but it is Flash and not the groovy openness of Theora.
