How I borked A Linux Box

Post by dann » Wed Aug 04, 2004 8:45 pm

Okay, let's hear it. How did you bork a linux box? Now we are not talking about a failed kernel compile here, but a software install, de-install, configuration change or something that rendered your Linux box unuseable and requiring a re-install.

We'll collect them, then have a poll and the winner will win something. Maybe a t-shirt or something.

Gentoo system wide upgrade

Post by Patrick » Thu Aug 05, 2004 5:41 am

Note this was about 2 years ago:
After painfully installing Gentoo (on a 800mhz system) I decided to do a system wide upgrade via emerge -world. The packages appeared to download and install correctly. I booted up and my system was completely dead in the water. All my init scripts were completely gone. This was especially painful since the Gentoo install took about 3 days. I'm sure Gentoo is a little more stable now. I would be willing to try it again on a faster system.
Live and learn. :)

A long time ago now (back in the beginning of my Linux days) I removed a large piece of software that wasn't doing much, called glibc.........

Wow, how long ago was this? I did the same thing back when slack 7.1 was running on the server. In fact, I did not learn my lesson and did it a second time a few months after that. The sad part was that I was administering the linux box remotely when I remove glibc. And the rest was history...

I have another one. I had a slackware box running for a goodly amount of time. One day I was messing around with fdisk and deleted the /usr partition. My partition scheme at the time was a seperate /, /usr, and /home.

Well, three months later when the power went out and the machine went down, it did not come back up happy. I spent some time trying to figure out what happened. And then I recalled, I friggin fdisked the /usr partion!

Even with that partition gone and a good portion of the sofware with it, the damn thing still tried to run.
