Thanks Dave. I would be cool to talk to Judd. I'm really liking Arch the more I use it. I think Dan would really like Arch.
You know what, if Dann wants a nice intergrated distro, he should give SUSE 10.0 a whirl, I know he doesn't like RPM, but he can trow apt4rpm on there and then you almost don't know it's RPM.

When I set the system up I find it very manageable and not a pain at all, I prefer something like the ports system from FreeBSD, but if you use the right RPM wrappers, it bareable.

By the way Pat. have you tried KDE 3.5 yet? Arch already have packages for it.

Yeah, I'm liking it, too. :D It's more work to get things set-up, but I'm learning so much, and it really isn't all that difficult to understand.

Sure, Dann might like it. Although, it doesn't come with all of the codecs pre-installed. He'd have to "Pacman" them.... Or was that Linc, looking for a distro that had all that set-up by default? I can't remember.

Dan doesn't quite strike me as a Suse kinda guy. Just a wild guess! :)

I'll probably upgrade it tonight.

It's still in the "testing" repository... but, yes, it's there. I'll wait for it to appear in "Extra". Shouldn't take long.

No no, but just to quote him "I've playing around with GNOME, and I really don't like GNOME", I don't know how he feels about KDE, but SUSE provides a very sweet KDE desktop IMHO, and something that just keeps amazing me about SUSE 10 is the stability of the KDE that's included, before my hard drive died, Konqueror had only crashed once in over 1½ months.

Also, I'm not a SUSE guy just because I live close to Germany, I like it because it pretty much satisfies all my requirements of a good distro, Mandriva is also pretty good, but the thing that I don't like about it is that the software is not "new" enough, I don't want GNOME 2.10 I want GNOME 2.12, even though it was released a few days earlier the SUSE people still put it into version 10.0, I like the fact that SUSE is bleeding-edge but also has a lot of stability in the bag at the same time.

Even though SUSE may not have the greatest multimedia support, it's VERY easy to add that stuff in, the only thing you do is add the Packman repository to YaST and swap out the included Xine packages with Packman packages, install MPlayer, also the w32codecs and then you're in business!
When I noticed that I didn't like GNOME it just made me apreciate SUSE that much more, because they're one of the only distros I know that builds a very very nice KDE centric distro with a GREAT configuration system, seriously, you can install the NVIDIA drivers by checking a check box and clicking accept, same thing with the Microsoft WebFonts.

Your Konqueror crashes?!

Gee, I don't know if I can remember when Konqueror crashed on me the last time. I'm quite positive it hasn't since 3.3, at the least.... during my days using Mepis (just before adopting Kanotix).

I'm using Konqueror that much for web browsing, the thing is that when I've been moving a lot of files around and doing a lot of crazy things very very quickly Konqueror sometimes crashes, it hasn't done that in SUSE Linux 10.

I use Konqueror as my web browers, too... as well as FTP and SMB (at the office).

Interesting.

As a suggestion for 2006, how about some long-time SUSE people? It was very interesting having Greg Mancusi-Ungaro on, but I would really like to know what the older SUSE people think of things such as the openSUSE project...... and maybe why all five CDs are required to install the standard set of desktop packages with SUSE Linux. :P

Interview possibilities

Post by gene » Fri Dec 30, 2005 11:10 pm

The Arch Linux creator is a great idea for an interview.
Other possibilites might include someone connected with Vector Linux, or even Zenwalk Linux--both of which are Slackware variants and use Xfce as a primary desktop.

I recently installed Vector Linux and actually had only a couple of minor problems with it: uncommenting a couple of lines in the /etc/fstab file to enable the use of a floppy and a jumpdrive/pendrive and a little quirk in the Sylpheed-Claws 1.9.9 email client that wouldn't display jpg attachment files.

I installed Vector on an old Pentium II 400 Mhz Dell and it was pretty snappy actually.

Arch is pretty interesting also, and most of its installation is fairly straightforward (even for a relative newbie like myself) but they would really help themselves by nailing down some of the configuration. Configurating your internet connection can be an intimidating task in Arch, especially for the newbie.

I would like to hear from the developer of the Darwinia and see what his view is on the future of games on Linux.

How about getting Mark Shuttleworth on the show? I have a few questions I'd like to see him grilled with!  :P :D

Nope, I was going to ask him why Kubuntu's Konqueror is so ugly, and why the Ubuntu guys choose GNOME when they started over KDE, because we know for a fact there are more KDE users out there.
