A one paragraph TLLTS review on UbuntuForums

Post by greggh » Fri Sep 29, 2006 8:40 pm

I just want to say first that I didn't write the review...

The Linux Link Tech Show - These guys are starting to annoy me, they get their facts wrong (nonexistant research I suspect), the bodily humour is not fun past the first 5 mins and they have no idea on how to conduct an interview both a strenght and a weakness as you don't get that OpenAudio feel where they know the answers in advance so it's not so much an interview as a conversation.. for some guests it works for others it doesn't. Basically I listen to this one if there's a guest on I want to hear, I skip 99% of the banter as it's just "OMFG I just got this new thingy... does it run Slackware??.. Dan farts a lot"

Well that's a rather accurate review.

The 'Does it run slackware' question is kinda pointless anymore isn't it? Are any of them even running slack regularly, even though it still seems to be thier favorite distro?

I agree...and yet, I love this show

BTW the stuff was similar to The Linux Show, the show was one of the worst qualities, it was expensive with everyone on the show. The podcasts (recordings) were always late, and usually there was big blank spaces. Not to mention some really weird blackouts. Yet it is one of my favorite shows ever.

But yes, Dann farts a lot.

For the most part that description is true. Especially the bit about Dann's horrendous, paint peeling gas. But I still enjoy listening to the Tech Show. It's such a relief listening to a show where the hosts just let everything hang, and aren't afraid of potentially offending a few wankers. The content can be a tad lacking at times, and the sound quality is less than consistent, but there's really nothing else like TLLTS on the 'net, and I think that's something to be proud of.

Notice how bad press always seems to get more attention than good press?

At least it's press of some sort, I suppose. :)

Not a single person has replied to my response to the "review." Not a single person has backed up my opinion, either. I'm not sure why.

I missed your response. Is it on the Ubuntu forum?

Never mind.. I found it. I'd reply, but I'd have to register for yet ANOTHER forum I.D. I'm tired of forum I.D.s.

It's in that same thread - the OP only linked to the "review" that appeared about halfway through the thread. You can see the entire thread by clicking on the link in the upper right of the page.

Good reply though, Snarkout. I see someone else did agree with you and actually met the gang at the OLF.

To be fair, the guy that gave his opinions on UbuntuForums pretty much ripped on all the Linux Podcasts to some degree. But, as has been said many times, it's not really fair to compare TLLTS to your standard podcast (gee, I got to staop using that term or Apple is going to send me a C&D). It's live, raw and unedited, which is why I enjoy listening to it, warts and all.

The Linux Link Tech Show - ...
A pretty good review. He doesn't like fart jokes. He doesn't like the interview style. These are just personal preferences. He doesn't like talk about Slackware. Again, personal preference. Every show is going to show SOME bias towards SOME distro.

I wish he would have backed up the accusation "they get their facts wrong." I've heard an occasional inaccurate fact, but it's no secret that the show is based on personal opinion rather than research.

I don't feel bad about this review at all. If people like the show, none of these things are negatives.

Agreed. He doesn't have to like the show. Just like the content is our opinion, the review is his opinion. Like you, my only bone of contention is the "they get their facts wrong". What is he talking about? For the most part we're pretty accurate about the technical stuff. The opinion part is our own preferences. Maybe he doesn't like the sh|t brown jokes when talking about Ubuntu. He should get a sense of humor. I think we're pretty open when it comes to different distros. Just go around the room and we'll tell you what we run:
Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Arch, Slackware, Suse, Debian, BSD, etc.. Add what we work with at our jobs (Solaris, OS390, Windows, Netware, OSX). That's a pretty diverse set of distros/OSs. Can other shows claim that diversity?

I was around Dann all day Saturday and didn't experience even 1 fart! I guess he spent it all on the drive to Columbus.

I'm not complaining. :D

I can attest that Dan does indeed fart in his sleep!
