Dude, if it wasn't because Zack is a brilliant guy and is so darn busy, you should have him as a co-host!

But anyway, how KDE 4 will play along with the new ways of using 3D graphics. I can tell you something about that actually. KWin, the KDE window manager, will get compositing built in, so it will essentially become a compositing window manager, so it might have it's own effects, but I could imagine KDE making a way to use Compiz plugins in KWin or something.

I'll hopefully get to know about that in the future, we'll see ...
I do have to say that installing Mandriva (the kde version) they have compiz integrated nicely and works really well in kde. I haven't tried gnome with it but it seems just as native/integrated on kde in Mandriva than it does on gnome in Suse.
That is actually not the case. When using Compiz on KDE, without some recent KDE patches, your desktop switcher no longer works, and the window decorator is not themeable, plus the window decorator is done with GTK, so it's context menu looks odd compared to the rest of KDE.

I have tried XGL+Compiz in Mandriva, and yes it does work pretty well, but I'd prefer KWin itself to do all the effects so that it's actually a part of KDE doing all the cool stuff, and not something that can't integrate deeply with KDE.

Compiz integrates very well with GNOMe because it uses Gconf and stuff.

Just a note regarding the AIGLX / Xgl thing...

I've have my home system running AIGLX and my office PC running Xgl. Personally, I much prefer AIGLX. I don't know if it's due to anything Mandriva has done in order to get the two systems working under the OS, but Xgl is more "problematic" in my opinion. Not having the ability for direct rendering is a definite drawback, from my experience so far.

I'd recommend anyone who has a choice to the kind of graphics card that is installed in their box, take the time and look for one that is AIGLX friendly.

That is because of the way Xglx is constructed, it's an extra nested X server layered on top of the traditional X.Org server, and it has no way to do direct rendering.

AIGLX adds new hooks to the X.Org server, which allows Compiz, through accelerated indirect rendering, to work with all the same effects of XGL, once all this is rock solid.

NVIDIA is working on AIGLX support as we speak, the beta drivers they have released adds the needed extension (GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap), however I never use beta kernels or drivers, and right now I am frankly interested in ditching the NVIDIA driver because of a big fat root exploit in it (I can just hear Theo de Raadt and the OpenBSD foks laughing their asses off right now, but of their endless warnings of binary blobs).

What are the other viable options at this point? ATI is not any beter, and honestly my experience with their driver has been absolute crap. I was under the impression that none of the free drivers were all that good at aiglx/xgl/compiz/beryl/ect.

WE AIN'T GOT NOTTIN'!!!!!! DAMN IT!!

No but until ATi updates their stupid proprietary drivers, or until AMD hopefully opens them up, or just parts of them, or releases docs and specs, we only have stable Intel drivers, stable Radeon 92XX drivers, and unstable/experimental R300 drivers.

Snarkout wrote:ATI is not any beter, and honestly my experience with their driver has been absolute crap.
Couldn't have said it better myself, because that's essentially what ATi's drivers are, C R A P!
Another problem with ATi's drivers is that they use an old-ass version of DRI, with that, there is no way to do AIGLX, without a remarkable revamp of their driver.

Well, that problem comes from the fact that the only card we have reliable, stable and libré drivers for is really slow cards (Radeon 92XX), but it should work OK.
The new Intel chips are pretty goodm but those are integrated chips, and that can really suck.

Yesterday I installed Mandriva 2007 on a co-worker's Compaq that had on-board Intel video. It ran AIGLX quite nicely. I think the Intel 3D chip was older and it was pushed to it's maximum capacity, but it still provided a very usable 3D environment.

When I installed Mandriva, I did not get the "there are proprietary drivers for this video card" message (which I usually get with ATI and Nvidia cards). So, I'm assuming it's using free drivers.

UPDATE

Here are the specs on the video controller:
Manufacturer- Intel Corp.
vendor id - 8086
device id - 2562
sub-vendor id - 109f
sub-device id - 3189
