First reviews of Fedora Core 6

I started the download of the DVD iso last night off of bittorrent. I will definitely give FC6 a good look.

The servers seemed to be getting hammered to hell and back. Bittorrent is the only way to go. I finished my download last night and am seeding now.

I'll probably try a test install some day soon. I usually give it a few weeks and watch the mailing lists before I install.

I have it running on my G4 PowerPC Mac mini, seems really nice. There's just some bugs in Compiz that puts like a pink color layer on top of the normal desktop, which leaves it pretty much unusable. I'm quite sure that this is a problem with Compiz, as AIGLX by itself, is turned on automatically as soon as X.Org notices the right driver support.

Besides that little problem, Fedora Core 6 seems really nice, except for my classic Fedora complaint which is the ugly-ass BlueCurve icons and uglifyment of KDE.
The new Echo icon theme should be ready for Fedora Core 7, I very much look forward to that, the death of BlueCurve is something I look forward to!


As an early warning for Pat, YUM is still quite slow, it has gotten quite a bit faster when updating the repositories, but facinatingly, it's only a snitch faster than the piece of shit ZENworks system that Novell put into SUSE.

I downloaded off of a mirror. The torrent was damn slow on my network even though everything was working. Time Warner was probably throttling it to hell and back. Poked around and got a mirror and got the DVD iso and verified the HASH. Started the burn before work....it should be done now.

Keep in mind...the YUM repos are usually on the same servers as the ISO's. It being slow now should not be a surprise.

You should file a bug on this. From everything I've read, Metacity should be used be default. Compiz needs to be turned on in the "Desktop Effects" menu to work.

As has been noted, the servers are getting hammered. Don't blame yum for a slow internet connection. Yum can not fix the internet.

Yast is definitely faster than previous versions

You were probably referring to yum, not Yast.

Other than that, I'm guessing problems with repository access during install may be because the servers are overloaded. The Extras repositories have never had to deal with this kind of load before. They also depend on Livna, which has few mirrors.

Still, it should fail-over gracefully and fix itself later.
