You and I both had good experiences, then. I had to manually install checkinstall because of a conflict with another program I've forgotten, and mplayer for some reason. Other than that, the upgrade was flawless.

It is worth noting that I used the recommended update script instead of just editing my sources.list.

Where is this script? I saw a brief set of upgrade instructions over at kubuntu.org, but that's it - mostly "change repos, dist-upgrade, add these python packages, reboot."

I hear with Ubuntu you're not supposed to use the "change sources.list, update, dist-upgrade" path. Now, Pat obviously didn't have much trouble doing this, but other people did, and people are claiming it's because they didn't use the update manager. I didn't have any trouble using the update manager, it was a piece of cake. Here's the link:

For the lazy, like myself, basically you just type this into a terminal:

gksu "update-manager -c"

Took several hours for the download, but I let it download while I was asleep at night. Reminded me of my gentoo upgrades in that way, funny enough.

That's the way I learned how to upgrade Debian based systems. It hasn't failed me yet.

Yeah, I don't understand how this might work differently, but it was a slick interface. You might get a tsk, tsk when you go to the support forums, and they will blame you for not using the approved method, which is good to know.

I forgot to add....I used the Ubuntu method. Yet my X was totally borked and who knows what else. I figured ahh screw it and did a fresh install. Besides, I wanted to see the new installer anyway.

And with that you get the fast booting "upstart" system,c where as dist-upgrade doesn't give you that; have to manually apt-get it.

True. That's something you want, but I have yet to see ANY speed improvement on my Ubuntu boot.....not that I time it. I don't have to reboot cuz it's a laptop and suspend works pretty nicely.

Yeah, the change in boot speed isn't that noticable for me, either. The shutdown speed is fantastic, though!

After I installed Kubuntu 6.10 on my laptop it keeps locking up randomly. I turned off acpi and it still does it, but not quite as often. It ran perfectly on Dapper, never locked up once.
I am d/ling and going to try regular ubuntu, thinking that maybe the newer kde stuff is causing it. I'll post back when I find out if it is solved. Right now just for fun I'm downloading the dev version of kde4. I'm going to wipe it off my laptop anyay, but I just want to see it for now.
I'm running it on a toshiba Satellite 1.3Ghz / 256 Meg. I haven't put it on my desktop yet. i dont know if I will like gnome yet or not, haven't used it for many years.

Edit 11/3: I wiped out kubuntu and put on ubuntu. Gnome loads and seems to run not alot, but noticeably faster than kde. No lockups yet. Still dont know if I like gnome or not, I'll have to use it more. By the way, if you are curious about what the kde4 package looks like, it looks exactly like the default kubuntu 6.10. It is definatly faster and more responsive, but not much is included, will be nice to see when it is ready.
Edit #2: Ok, I dont know like gnome. I love how it is clean looking and responsive, but trying to modify it is a real pain in the ass. Modifying default apps, and other things I take for granted in kde thats so easy. Plus I hate gstreamer. Just my 2 cents on the whole issue. I'll put up with a lockup every now and then... for now..
