A meeting with "Devell"

If anyone is interested I thought I'd let you know that on #opensuse-project @ Freenode, Nat friendly and some Novell dudes are doing a meeting with the community to answer questions and address concerns.

Update: Meeting is over, you'll be able to read the IRC log (transcript) of it soon, and expect a surprise from Mr. Davila soon

the more I read about this deal the more I get pissed off about it. Nat and company act like we need some acknowledgment from microsoft to legitimize Linux.

he also says we should be working on taking customers away from microsoft well isn't that a little hard to do when microsoft is getting money when you buy a novell maintenance agreement.

they contradict themselves so much it isn't even funny anymore. glad I wiped their os off my machines.

and personally I am glad shuttleworth invited their developers over - it was just an invitation and is nothing compared to what they did to the community. I am glad it made them mad. I won't be recommending novell anymore unless this deal gets modified or gets a do over in a big way.

You know, you should make a list of questions for Novell and send them to Pat, I have a feeling he might be able to use them sometime soon.

I sent an email to Nat and heard back from their PR guy. He basically said they would get back to us soon with a firm interview date. FYI, Greg Mancusi-Ungaro is no longer with the company.

The best thing that could happen now is if the OpenSUSE developers branch off and go make a distro. of their own with the code they've worked so hard on... leaving Novell/SUSE to die a quiet death.

There's nothing that Novell PRs can say that will put my trust in them now.

Wow that was a very disheartening chat. Typical talking points spin. When spin control tries to convince you that nothing will change....something will change. Oh and thank God this deal got done so that open xml "might" work better in Oo.

This is a bit naive. It's pretty clear that SOME people will choose Linux distributions because of the principles that distro represents. I'm sure people use Debian because of its community and "freeness" just as much or more than the fact that it is good. People WILL switch from SUSE because of this.

What I got from the chat transcript was that as long as Microsoft does what is says, we have no problem. All we have to do now is trust Microsoft to keep their word.

I also think it's odd that the interview starts off talking about why the engineers didn't know about this deal until the last minute, then we're supposed to trust these same underinformed people when they say everything is OK.
