fast 64bit live CD

Distro Masters -

Do you know of a fast 64bit live CD? I only need to boot to a command line and do a couple admin tasks.

I did run across this:

I haven't tried it yet, but it's slack based.

First of all, why do you need a 64 bit disto just to do admin tasks? there is no benifit....

FYI bluewhite64 is a rip off of slamd64, the creator has asked him many times to aknowlege him but afaik nothing of the sort has happened..

Yeah, a 32-bit live cd like SLAX or KNOPPIX should suffice for simple tasks.

As I understand it, Slamd64 is a 64-bit distro capable of running 32-bit binaries, and Bluewhite64 is a full on, pure 64-bit port. I wouldn't say it's a "ripoff" of Slamd64, it's common for these type of things to happen.

It's a live distro that can be installed with all the bells and whistles (3D, OpenGL, Beryl & AIGLX, closed codecs). It's also a super easy way to install Gentoo.

Have you installed it, Pat? If so, how does the experience differ from a standard Gentoo install?

The last i knew of Bluewhite64 was that he used all of the same packages as slamd64 but removed the 32 bit combat packages and called it a port of slackware where its clearer a fork.
More information can be found on freenode #slamd64 , fred87 is in the channel and is the guy who created and maintains slamd64 , he would be able to tell you more than i know...

Well I'll be damned! It never occurred to me to boot to a 32bit live CD on a 64bit machine! I may have to change my log in name for this discussion group!

Will try Slamd64.

What is a good live CD that has good administration tools and opens at a command line without even lauching X?

I had a look on distrowatch.com and none of the live cds boot into the commmand line specifically, I would get a distro that is less concerned with multimedia and the desktop like say damn small linux, Fire, Hakin9 LIve, Knoppix, Gentoo LiveCD ( that boots into the command line as i used it to install gentoo) , PlanB..

Take a look at each indivdual live cd if you have time. Any of the above should do..

There's this really cool LiveCD called SLAX, which is also VERY easy to customize. You should DEFINITELY check it out, it doesn't focus on system administration, but you could easily make your own version of it for yourself that does have everything you need.

I have my own version of SLAX, TJAX I call it (Creative, aren't I?), it has a shitload of bookmarks in Firefox and a lot of RSS feeds in Thunderbird, including a little bit of my favorite music.

Actually, there is a livecd that does exactly what you want. It is called grml and it boots into CLI and has a ton of text tools and sysadmin tools. Because it doesn't have all of the multimedia stuff you have almost every CLI tool at your finger tips to use right away after boot. Get it at:
