"Cisco entered into negotiations with Apple in good faith after Apple repeatedly asked permission to use Cisco's iPhone name," said Mark Chandler, Cisco senior vice president and general counsel, in a statement. "There is no doubt that Apple's new phone is very exciting, but they should not be using our trademark without our permission."

We shall see.

They have got way too big, its ridiculous thing to do, even microsoft are not that greedy for buisness that there use a name before a agreement.

I see it as Cisco copying Apple. Apple gets pissed. Cisco beats them to the trademark. Apple flips Cisco off.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure apple could put that spin on it and come out ahead. Apple was definitely marketing i[insert name] here way before cisco. You never know, though - cisco isn't a pushover by any means.

If memory serves the company that came up with the iPhone name did so back in '96 and Cicso owns the name via acquisitions.

It's a well known fact that Apple will use intellectual property without the consent of the owners. Just ask the guys at the Linux Action Show. At least if this was Microsoft, they would have bought Cisco out before using their trademark.
