Linux games.... They ARE out there!

Linux has a bunch of arcade style games that are extremely addictive, the type of games we need more of. Tux Racer is awesome (except I got stuck at level 3 or something) and so is Metal Blob Solid/Blob Wars. I actually found my old favorite game Warzone 2100 was released under the GPL license and was ported over to Linux.

Once Tux Racer got popular they closed it an released it commercially. That's why it's only had 3 levels for so many years.

Someone has picked it up, though, and there's now a free version called Planet Penguin Racer. They've added a few features and a bunch of new levels.

If you're running Fedora it's in Extras as ppracer.

1) yum install ppracer
2) play!

No problem.

I'm also enjoying Freedroid and Freedroid RPG (although the latter is far from finished).

Thats the sweet thing about open source, they can't trap you into running it then make you pay for

If anyone is interested in Freedroid RPG and hasn't played it for a while I'd definitely check out the new version (0.9.13). They've improved gameplay quite a bit. It's harder, but more balanced. It's still very much in development, but the game is now winnable.

The game engine is pretty solid and the story line works, but they could use some help fleshing it out beyond the one mission that's now complete. If someone was enterested in game design it would be easy to make an impact by designing levels.

I have not tried it out but I plan on it. The only reason I keep windows around is to play games. Maybe I don't need to anymore.

I don't think Linux is quite there yet, but there are plenty of good games. I've been using dosbox lately to install and play old DOS games that I can't even run correctly on Windows.

It just depends on what games you like. There are lots of games that are fun to play but don't need the latest graphics, lots of memory and a 2Ghz processor.

I still keep a Windows XP install around just in case. After all I paid big bucks for it, and it only costs 10 gigs of HD space.
