I don't really see what the big deal is about Apple creating their own proprietary operating system for their hardware. IBM has been doing this with AIX for many years, and nobody ever bashes IBM.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_AIX_(operating_system) , it supports quite a few different hardware.
IBM have had there fair show of abuse, its just not so evident.
AIX does not stop you from doing what you want, it does not include drm like apple or ms.

Thats at the moment, i am sure in the future vendors that do not include encryption on there chips will find it a hard time , now with signed only drivers allowed in vista.

If BSD went poof tomorrow, it would take OS X with it in my opinion because Mac OS X uses a big truckload of BSD code.

So if Linux went away, I'd install FreeBSD, pull out all the binary blobs, and use it for my desktop OS.

Wally Balljacker wrote:Not everyone wants some generic, white box Windows PC. What's wrong with wanting a computer that has a little style, a little pizzazz, and is a little bit different from what everyone else has? I've always subscribed to the "you get what you pay for" notion. Sure, you may pay a buck or two more for a Mac, but you are really getting a user experience not found on a Joe Schmuck Dell machine. On OS X you don't have the security and stability issues, you get a full suite of premium software, and hardware that has some serious sex appeal. Sure, Mac users can be smug, but can you blame them?
I personally compare Mac people to like rich people who are being arrogant, and sneering at people who aren't rich, just because they themselves are rich. Sure, you can't really blame the rich dude for being happy that he's rich and all, but that doesn't change the fact that be may be a complete dick to other people and freaking annoying.

And also, both Dell and HP computers look quite good these days if that's a motive for buying a Mac. One thing I think people forget when they buy a Mac for the design is that it is a proprietary case, power supply and motherboard design, so if it brakes after the warranty has run out, you are so screwed! If you have a standard PC (And I'm excluding Dell, HP etc. because they do proprietary stuff too) you could buy new components and have somebody install 'em for you.

Same here. I'll never go back to Windows. If Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris, and the entire open source community disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn't at all hesitate to buy a MacBook.
Well, like I just said, if BSD disappeared, then OS X would go with it. Or at least Apple would have to rewrite like 75% percent of the OS itself.

So I think the "If BSD disappeared, then I'd use OS X" is ludicrous, because OS X has BSD as a core dependency.

Not me. If LInux went poof I would use Windows over Mac without even blinking. As much as I dislike Windows, I despise Mac and its OS an order of maginitude more.
Yep, same here. The Windows UI I frankly am OK with, and as much as the registry sucks, at least it gives you some way to tweak some things.

I personally could use Windows and have it run fairly decently, because I know how to do that stuff.

CptnObvious999 wrote:I don't like Macs because Apple is even more controlling than Microsoft but they are able to feed the "Mac community" bullshit about how great they are and they eat it up. Even though most people run windows and they don't know crap about computers they don't eat everything up that Bill tells them, most of them already have a negative stigma towards Microsoft.

Mac users generally feel as though they are better because they run a Mac and take it to a personal level. When I tell them how Apple is trying to lock customers in using iTunes you wouldn't believe how defensive they get. I hate how I see iPods everywhere and suddenly any mp3 player has to be an iPod. Even if it looks good, I would take functionality over just look any day even though there are lots that offer both at the same price.

The Windows users I know are just using what it came with while the Mac users seem to have been brainwashed and think they are special because they are doing exactly what the ads and fanboys have been telling them.

If Linux were to disappear I would use BSD then Windows not Mac mostly because of the users but also for some other reasons (such as the jellybean and steel look).

Even still, you would be buying from companies like Toshiba, ASUS, AMD, Intel, etc not all one company which btw would mean that there would be FAR less competition in the hardware market and we would end up having slower computers, at least thats what I think would happen.

And that affects me, how? Seriously, the whole "I hate Macs because Mac users are rich idiots" argument is so lame. I'm not going to let the actions of some retarded Mac user dictate what OS I use. If I wanted to use OS X I would, regardless of how most Mac users act.

Dell machines look like ass compared to Apple's stuff. I'm sorry. From a design and engineering standpoint, Apple has been on a whole 'nother level since the PowerBook G4's, and PowerMac G5's came out. Somehow Apple has managed to make computer hardware "sexy". I don't know what their secret is, but nobody else has ever come close to achieving that.

I disagree, I hate the way the MacBook and iPod look, I think there are plenty of notebooks now that look good. Heck I don't like my the way my Wii looks right now because it makes me think of Apple. I'd take a good graphite or glossy black over plain white any day. Although I guess thats just my opinion.

I didn't say it would, I just mentioned how I felt about Mac people (When I say Mac people I mean Mac whores).

Apparently I need to spend hours on every post I do, because for some reason everything I freaking say always gets taken out of context.

Nicely said.
I guess the thing is, for me, my computer is more than just something I use. One of the many reasons why I enjoy GNU/Linux and BSDs is that there's a good community out there of other users that you can talk to etc. kind of the culture of that OS or something like that. I don't like the Mac's culture, so I, as in Troels Milinda Just, as in the guy from Denmark, and him alone (Working on my new context lockdown technique) would prefer to stand the f*ck away from Mac OS X because he don't wanna be part of the culture of dickheads and assholes.

Wally Balljacker wrote:Dell machines look like ass compared to Apple's stuff.
I sharply disagree here, but I guess that's just my taste of style. I like something simple and clean looking, and the black, kind of office-style, that Dell uses seems to be very nice to me, because it's simple. In the same way that UNIX is a beautiful OS, is because it's so freaking simple.

I personally prefer an assy looking whitebox that utilizes a standardized design for case, power supply and motherboard and everything else so that I don't get into vendor lock-in. I see Apple's designs more as a tool of vendor lock-in. Try changing the power supply in a Mac if it broke, and after the warranty was out, sure it may not be so hard to track down a Mac power supply, because it's Apple!! But don't expect to be able to pick something up for real cheap.

What's more annoying, to me, than the apple-fanboy vs everyone else argument is the use of PC to make a point when they actually mean Windows. Yes, PC's run games, but most of those games run in Windows and Apple's systems are PC's. Further, the bitch about Mac users not being able to run Windows games is false as you can run Windows on Apple hardware now.

That aside, I think apple has done a lot of things right and appeals to the widest audience from a usability perspective. They have managed to pull off a system that is not only easy to use for Aunt Bessy, but appealing to a huge geek audience.

The iPod is an elegant design that is extremely approachable for all audiences. Couple that with the iTunes interface and you have one of the best media devices on the market for acquiring and listening to media on the go. Furthermore, the control of the ipod is second to none, in my opinion.

The iPhone is a snazzy up-in-coming media device/phone that has turned a lot of head and will continue to do so. Apple has taken some of the best parts of OS X and integrated them into a phone which is sure to be accessible to all levels of consumers.

Now don't get me wrong, I find most of Apple's products to be too limiting for me, too restrictive and a bit pricey. Plus, there is an air of superiority; a lot of which is generated by Apple's PR-hype machine. But like it or not, it does work. If only we had a PR machine like that in the FOSS community.

Apple is a status symbol for a different consumer market than our community generally travels in.

Personally, I like Macs, always have. But I'm not one of the snobby Mac people. I can't stand snobs of any kind. Although I am sick of hearing the complaints about the mouse having one button. There is a simple solution to that. Use a regular USB PC mouse, it works. It would be nice if Apple moved on to a standard mouse, but I don't see that happening, it's part of the Mac package. I don't see what all of the animosity toward Macs is about anyway, if you don't like them, don't buy one. It's not that complicated.

You're right. Apple won't move to including a standard mouse. Now you have to ask yourself why. And in that very question and answer is a good part of the reason why I can't stand Apple, Macs, and their community of fanboys.

What do you have against Apple trying to be different? Is it so terrible that they do things their way? Jesus, the last thing this world needs is another beige box PC maker.

Apple's continued insistence that the fashion statement of having a one button mouse outweighs the importance of the usability of a standard mouse goes to the very core of what I dislike about Apple. Coolness over substance...

I think you're way overanalyzing Apple here. For an average mom or pop user, a one button mouse is ideal, believe it or not. My mother has never right-clicked in her life. Apple understands the importance of simplicity, and that's why Macs are so accessible to non-technical users.

Man, I'm a little late here, but I still think my argument about control makes sense. I've said before that Apple maintains tight control on their hardware, more control than I like, but how is Apple's control over their hardware and software comparable to Microsoft making it possible for hardware on a Vista machine to be bricked? Yeah, I don't care for how much control Apple keeps on their computer, but they mainly use their control only to make a very tight, integrated product, and they've typically favored the consumer over some other business's interests. We all know how Microsoft prefers to cater to developers, developers, developers, and are now catering to the music industry in hopes of controlling that market as well.

So, in either case, if you have to choose between who controls your computer, Apple or Microsoft's business associates, who would you rather have? Apple, who has a history of favoring their own customers, or Microsoft, who has a history of always favoring other businesses over their own users? Microsoft gives you the Zune, with the one interesting wireless feature that's rendered useless with silly self-destruct mechanisms because the music industry wants them, while Apple gives you the iPod and tries to make things as easy as possible, and support problems aside, tries to make their customers' lives easier.

Apple's new mice now give you the ability to right click, middle click, scrollball, and squeeze the buttons on the side. It's simply not turned on by default. So the "one button" argument is simply false now, and besides that, Wally Balljacker is absolutely right. My sister and over 90% of the people at my workplace NEVER right click. If they do it's an accident and it generally confuses them.
