I have used mandrake and fedora and they both ship a working version of compiz and aiglx and I have say both are very stable and are both easy to turn on and off.
Was on a desktop the other day with windows and I don't agree that it is easy to learn. I still couldn't find out where or how to make the effects happen. Granted I probably didn't really give it the old college try like I do beryl but supposedly that is one of windows strong points is how easy it is.
I use beryl on fedora and kde and use the kde decorations and it works very well together - I use it day in and day out and it is very stable - has never crashed on me. and my wife uses fedora and compiz and she likes it and turns off sometimes and turns it on sometimes - and she is not computer literate.
so I don't think vista is ahead of linux with the 3d stuff and I still haven't seen any non-technical people use it on windows - the non-technical end users I have ran into don't like the 3d stuff anyway on windows and don't need it. - so in the end I think the 3d stuff will be very slowly adopted. but all of this is subjective but just had to throw in my two cents worth.
