24 hours without your computer
On March 24th, see if you can last 24 hours without using a PC. Go outside and do something, and help out the environment by shutting down.

I get to do just that for a whole week at the end of this month (family vacation).
Now where's my attaboy from the environmentalists??
Update: Forget the attaboy, our vacation requires a massive increase in our carbon footprint via Spirit Airlines. I'll probably be a candidate for the gallows upon my return.

Yeah. Unfortunately, this is just unrealistic for many, if not most. It's not like a "24 hours w/o your car" where you can ride your bike instead or carpool, or whatever. I can't exactly work on a router or server with pen and paper and a lot of wishing...CptnObvious999 wrote:I would if I didn't have work then.

Re: 24 hours without your computer
Does it count to make your computer do a task and then not go near it for 24 hours? Because you just know that I would queue up a bunch of hentai torrents for a Azureus to download, while I go out and meditate for a few hours!Wally Balljacker wrote:On March 24th, see if you can last 24 hours without using a PC. Nope, 'cause you're 'not helping out the environment by shutting down'. I'd give it a shot, but if I knew the latest version of Sabayon came out that day, I'd probably crumble under the sweet pressure!Tsuroerusu wrote:Does it count to make your computer do a task and then not go near it for 24 hours? The thing is, I use my computer for heating my room, it's cold as an ice age in here without it running! So I really don't like turning it off. It uses server-class SATA drives from Western Digital (Raptor and RE2 drives), and just runs 24/7, heating my room, seeding torrents (A few Linux distros and some CC stuff), and sometimes being my wake-up-clock!

I think that's why it's on a Saturday. Most people have weekends off.Snarkout wrote:Yeah. Unfortunately, this is just unrealistic for many, if not most. I just hope most of those dopes that are shutting down are windows users. It would be nice to have the internet free from 50,000ish windows computers sending viruses, having every installed program doing updates, etc, etc.
BTW, my DSL went out for about 6 hours last week, I actually had to spend time with the wife and kids. That was a long 6 hours. 24 hours? Not only would I learn there ages, but I'd probably also know their birthdates too.....

It's understandable that your wife would be a "Linux Widow", as most of ours certainly are, but if you don't know the color of her eyes, you are in serious trouble.elgordo123 wrote:<snip> I actually had to spend time with the wife and kids. I envy most people.Wally Balljacker wrote:I think that's why it's on a Saturday. Most people have weekends off.Snarkout wrote:Yeah. Unfortunately, this is just unrealistic for many, if not most. I've seen this popping up on various social networking sites, and it's too close to the Ghosts of Ted McGinley for me to go along. Too many busybodies with not enough projects to go around.
